ICS is certainlly facing a crisis as it has cycled through four principal's in seven years and has concerning high faculty attrition. Four year student body attrition is 50% meaning 50% of 10th graders who entered as 6th graders have left the school. Many ICS students are socially awkward and lead towards unkind - especially the boys. If you child is social they will NEED a social network (sports, drama, church, scouts etc...) in order to have peers to socialize with. Many teachers placate parents by appearing to be concerned and wanting to help struggling students, but nothing really changes after a week.Poor mental health is an issue and highlighted by added outside resources brought in-house in addition to the traditional guidance counselor.Curriculum has failed to evolve and requires additional language and arts and offers few STEM courses. Those students who do stay though 12th grade, are accepted at schools such as Western Washington, Seattle University and other mid-term universities.ICS offers no premium in college acceptance and given the sacriface of a life due to the homework load, your child is better off at the comprehensive high school.

ICS was once an amazing school, I will say this. When I came in as a 7th grader, the education I received by far surpassed that of my elementary school peers, who were attending Kirkland Middle School. Unfortunately, I can no longer say this. In the past six years, there have been three different principals. The current principal is utterly incompetent. The staff used to be fantastic, but they've hired so many new teachers over the years who simply aren't cut out to be invested in ICS's unique six-year program. I'm not saying the school is a complete bust. If you are willing to put in the time and effort to achieve at ICS, then go for it, but know that in your junior year, you and your peers will consider five hours of sleep to be an amazing accomplishment. I did go through ICS, and I did succeed, but in hindsight I do not think it was worth it. You will have a limited social life, an extremely limited STEM education, and you will have to do sports at your home school. Keep in mind that the school will not care if you have sports obligations which require you to take time off school. Getting into an ivy league school as an ICS student is actually more difficult that applying as a student from a regular high school. You will have to explain your lack of extracurricular achievement in light of the amount of time and effort you put in to simply maintain a GPA of above 3.7.

Even though sometimes, ICS is stressful, but the teachers and the community can help with efficiency. The community is very nice at this school.

ICS is an amazing school with very good teachers and focused in the Academic Life. They have no sports, no P.E. They have orchestra, band and theater. I have a Junior student at ICS and she loves it and is very involved with the school. Homework hours are immense, group works are challenging and the student must make his life gravitating around school. My student was a procrastinator before heading to ICS and he had to work hard to change his behavior towards learning and scheduling his life. We had a conversation that if the stress was too much he would leave ICS and go to another school, but he was able to adapt himself. ICS is (according to US news) the best high school in WA State and the 13 best high school in the Country. It is challenging, it is stressful and it is not for everybody. It demand family involvement with the student life. If you have doubts about the school quality go to the school and check the board that shows the Universities where the students head to after their Senior year. Keep in mind: excellence has a price to be paid.

There is a reason why so many students transfer to other schools: ICS is awful.
