Community School Ratings & Reviews

This school has worked well for many families but not for others, and that is why there are so many polarized reviews. Kids who have left, have adjusted well in the regular public schools. Some were found to be behind in some areas while others moved on to achieve a 4.0 GPA and been placed in National Honor Society. Just like any other school, there is a range. Academics are not the only focus at this school. Social and emotional development is also strongly emphasized. Just because it is a "choice" or "lottery" program, does not necessarily mean it is a good fit for your family. Do your research. Know your kid and his/her needs, and find what is best for your family. This school has been great for my kids and my family. It has been a positive experience for us.

I love this school. It is not perfect but what school is. Academics may seem to not be top priority because the school also focuses on a child's social and emotional well-being. It is a small school.of 70 kids in grades 1-5. The 3 classes are split classes. Lots of volunteer work is required but that is how a "community" is formed. Very rare to be in a school where you know all the kids, all the parents and all the staff. The philosophy is very unique - no grades, no tests, no report cards, very little homework (if any). And because of this, this school may not be for everyone.

My child attended this school for several years. During that time I saw favoritism towards students who could sit and work on their own with no help. I saw special needs kids ridiculed, not by other sutdents, and called "stupid." If a child was gifted they were told to not show it as it might offend other kids. If a child struggled or need extra help they were quickly encouraged to leave the school. All the students needed extra tutoring or were behind when they left the school. I witnessed parents who were favored monitor the rest of the parents and report back on actions. We called them the minions. This school was nicknamed "The Communist School." Once we left I was flooded with stories from former parents who left filled with incindents of bullying that was ignored, and bullying by not just the other kids. Parents are required to pay "dues" ever year even though this is a public school. The school is filled with middle to upper middle class white families with few people of color mixed in. I have seen so many children wounded by this school and parents so brainwashed they are afraid to go to another school. It's really sad.

My kids both attended here and have done very well post-Community School (3.9 & 4.0 students in High School). Community School was a wonderful elementary school experience where they learned to love learning and excel at it. The extremely dedicated teachers and parents offer an environment that fosters critical thinking, creativity and striving to always do your best. The playground experience is like no other schools: all grades intermix and play together. There is no-excluding, no bullying. If you want your student in a caring environment that will help them to be academically successful yet at the same time have fun this is the place for them. As a parent you will also be able to participate in the process and feel a part of the community that is like no other public elementary school. This school does not grade or do a lot of homework, especially in the lower grades; don't go here if that is what you want or expect.

My son is a recent graduate. He is dyslexic/dysgraphic. He was always treated with care and respect and was challenged academically by the most dedicated teachers that I will ever meet. He learned to make friends and to be a good friend. To be a good student and to enjoy learning. To work well with others in a group and be determined to excel while working independently. Most importantly, he was given the space and time to figure out how to compensate for his academic struggles that he will have for the rest of his life so that he can be successful. The staff also takes every opportunity to coach kids with behavior situations. Bullying is taken very seriously and from my experience is not tolerated. Community School isn't for all parents...if a parent needs constant feedback and test scores to assure themselves that their child is OK, then CS would not be a good choice. My son is now going to an academically challenging choice middle school where he was moved up a grade level in math, scores very high on the MSP and has great grades. We certainly owe a great debt to the teachers and supportive community at CS for providing our family with a positive elementary experience!
