Kenmore Junior High School Ratings & Reviews

My child is in special ed and what i visited the class, over half of it was out of control. The teachers are trying too hard to be friends and not authorities, and that doesn't work. However, I think it is the policies, not the teachers. When I tried to volunteer, a student continually questioned my authority as a volunteer. I had to leave because the teacher's hands were tied. When I've tried to talk to the office about various issues, they sent me on a round robin of talk to him, who said talk to her, who says talk to him, and so on. The principal didn't pay attention to my email, so I emailed the superintendent. THEN my questions got answered. That is not how it should be. I would say the teachers are good but they too are frustrated by the policies that give them little ability to enforce rules, because the kids know they can get away with whatever they want, from boys downloading video games in the bathroom to girls talking in class and pretty much ignoring the teacher.

My children are no longer at Kenmore Jr High. An earlier review stated my thoughts. Administrators seem as if they want to be part of student body and "buddies" with the kids rather than mentors and authority figures. There is a "creepy" factor with one of the counselors that is still at Kenmore. My child and his friends disclosed certain "odd" behaviors with me recently that I would have confronted had I known at the time. By no means, do I want to disparage all of the teachers. There were some fine teachers in the science department, but this school needs a "house cleaning" and an "eye" on the Counselors.

my daughter was in honors algebra and had to help her teacher, who wasn't a math major in college to solve the algebra problems. We asked that she be moved up a grade to a more challenging math class that they wouldn't. When we met with the principal he supported the teacher, which we expected. A male principal who wore a dress for Halloween. When we spoke with the school administration they supported the school. Getting the picture. So we applied at Lakeside School (one of the top 30 private schools in the country) and she was accepted. She's now a Senior and went to Brown U during the Summer and received an A in advanced calculus. If you have smart children invest in a private school, you won't regret it.

This school should be better. It is located in a middle to upper middle class area with many involved parents. My experience, much like with other schools, is the administration. Too many teachers and counselors are worried about being "friends" instead of administrators and educators. The vice principals and principal are not good with difficult situations. To describe them as empty suits would be an insult to the suit. The sad thing is that they are reactionary and don't solve many issues until they become much larger problems. I guess that is why they are in the educational system because such actions don't make for a good career in the corporate world. As with many schools, there are some fantastic teachers and it is up to a parent to be proactive and guide their children into those classrooms.

The principal and staff at KJHS were very supportive in undertaking several new ventures that really enhanced student learning and utilized new technologies: One was incorporating Americana/bluegrass music into the music curriculum, and participating in an amazing 3+ orchestra gala at the Wintergrass Music Festival (Feb 2011) with Grammy winning guest artists in front of 1,000+ people. It was topped off with a special 3-way video conference involving the music students, a teacher in California and a Leadership program in Nashville that had music leaders from across the country and Switzerland. What an honor to be asked to participate. The students were amazing and got a huge round of applause. They were very poised and impressive!!!
