I've gone to many different schools. Of all of them, the drug problem in Squalicum is second only to Shuksan. There's even gang activity and occasional violence among students. The learning programs are .. subpar. Overall, I would say that this school is not worth your trouble, and you would be much better off going to one of the other schools in the area.

Over all, I’d say Squalicum is a good school. Judging by how MY kids performed there, and are performing now. The academics are good and I’ve seen great results. I do have a questionable parenting style, and have been called a Tiger mom - it was never an option for my kids to do poorly in school and not pursue higher education. I have never contested a grade my kids received because they were both given ample opportunities to fix/control the damage. My kids were engaged in sports, music, and volunteer activities and between schoolwork and those activities, they had little time for mischief. My kids were not on any medication (except an H2 blocker), and we live in an average house, in a 2 parent household (both US citizens), and do not receive any subsidies. I do believe those elements affect student performance and also provides my biases.

"Squalicum seems great at first, until you actually walk the halls. Even as just a freshman my mental health is near completely shattered. While I can't complain much about the teachers academically, they don't seem to truly care for students. The staff are where this school truly fails, the guy who was sexually harassing me requested a ""No contact contract"" against me because I called him out for calling someone a faggot on a bus ride. Meanwhile I was attempting to explain to the staff member who had me sign the agreement what he had done and said, her response, ""That doesn't matter, this is about what you did to him"" Yeah, I called someone out for what they said, I stood up for someone else, just like the school has been encouraging us to do. Yet I get in trouble and completely dismissed. I was caught self-harming in the bathrooms one day, instead of actually helping they searched my bag once and alerted all teachers to send me into the office if ""I seem more depressed than normal"" They haven't checked my bag since and have clearly forgotten about the incident. I am constantly being pulled out of class for pointless reasons, while there are more events that I could list those are the biggest, defiantly considering transferring to Bellingham, the school I originally wanted to attend, If you care about mental health, don't consider Squalicum."

Going to Squalicum High School is an average experience. The quality of education is lacking though. There are of course some outstanding teachers who go above and beyond, but many teachers are not experts in their fields and give out mindless busy work. I learned more in one quarter at college than I did in 4 years at Squalicum. If a student is advanced and wants to go places, they are often on their own. The extracariculas are fine. They occupy a student's time, but many are also just average. This being said, I still really enjoyed my experience here.
