Murray High School Ratings & Reviews

My experience at this school was a total 10/10. If I had not transferred to Murray I would not have graduated or even continued my high school career. I also may not have been here writing this review for this absolutely wonderful school. I recommend this high school to everyone I know that is looking for a different kind of schooling experience. Even if they are not looking I recommend that they check it out!

As a student at Murray, I always can find something to enjoy about each day. Whether that be playing games with my friends at lunch or doing simple work, the atmosphere is so free and upbeat, which is a drastic change from the feelings I got at other schools. The community is completely open to anybody, regardless of race, sexuality, or history. While it is still high school, and everybody has their problems, I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else.

Murray is a wonderful environment for your child if they are shy, if they have experienced bullying at any point in their public school experience, if there is a subject that they have particular problems with that requires continuous help (like math or science). It is a mastery learning school so material must be mastered before the student can move on. My son was at this school for two years and it made a great deal of difference in his ability to move forward with what he wants to do with his life. The teachers are great, especially the math teachers. The environment is supportive without babying. I have only the greatest respect for Ashby Kindler, the principal of this school. I am so thankful that this option was available to my son.

I am thrilled to find this website and that Murray is listed here! I am a founding member of Murray, which was started in 1988. In our 22nd year of existence, we are still going strong. Our school is the world's first Glasser Quality Public High School. We are based on Dr. William Glasser's Choice Theory, Reality Therapy, and Lead Management. This means that students choose to come to our school. We are a very successful state charter school, with a population of only 110 students. At Murray students and teachers work together on all aspects of school governance. For instance, there is a student committee who makes recommendations to the admissions committee for new students and there are students on the principal search committee (our wonderful principal is retiring this summer). Murray is based on respect and we refuse to accept failure. Murray students and teachers love each other.

The student/teacher ratio allows the teachers to get to know the students' individual strengths & weaknesses very quickly. They have a lot of respect for the students & I've seen my child blossom under this innovative teaching style. My child doesn't feel treated like cattle & is engaged in school. Grades, motivation & morale are UP! Murray has they highest SOL scores in Albemarle Co. & it's one of the best kept secrets.
