My son was enrolled in the special education class for ADHD. He had been on medication and special class for 2 years. When he started the class he was at the top of his class academically and after two years he is now at the bottom. He also went from a little problematic little boy to a scared almost traumatized little boy because of what was happening in that class. The methods and whatever they are doing are not helping but only making things worse. I remember he peed himself in the padded rooms they had because he was so scared and they wouldn’t let him go to the bathroom. I remember the one day that I decided to sit in class with him after they kept encouraging me to I noticed the one tool they had specifically for ADHD which was a rubber band on his chair he could fidget and excersice with made a little sound and he was scolded and got in trouble leading up to that was a constant all day entaganizing picking and pushing his buttons almost on purpose to see if he would just take being mistreated. It was a power struggle which is the complete opposite in ADHD therepy and management. They would trigger him to make him stay in the class. They don’t want to deal with taking a chance putting them into mainstream and anything god for bid happening where another parent would get upset. There point and reward system is a joke. My son would go 6 months perfect behavior which I’m telling you is a miracle impossible with his circumstance I wouldn’t be able to do it in a million years but he did and then one thing would start him all the way over to keep him in. This only reinforced to him that no matter what he did didn’t matter and made him give up and stop even trying. But that’s the plan right. My son became aggressive and angry during his time here and on Ritalin. He developed closterpgobia because they would keep him locked up far longer then they were telling me. He was scared at home to go to the bathroom by himself or anywhere alone. He wouldn’t let me touch him because he developed a ptsd from being held down and contained after simply reacting to being mistreated. Children need to be treated with respect and equality just like we do. If he didn’t react keep going and screaming they sure made sure they would keep at it till he did. If the idea is to suppress our inner voice that tells us something is wrong then we are killing our future.

This school could be awesome, but the Principal needs some help. There is a lack of support from parents. Mrs. Hanson is amazing, she is calm with the Kindergarten kids. Miss Haworth is a great new addition! I love volunteering as often as I can. I was excited at the beginning of the year, but now I desperately want to get my kids out of this school. My kids teachers are the only reason we stay and love school!!

My son has been attending Oquirrh for three years now. I probably would not have had him stay if it wasn't for Mrs. Thurman. She has always met with me and worked with my son regarding issues with children bullying him. She is always willing to do what is necessary to protect our children and I know for a fact she doesn't leave most days until around 5. The teachers I have interacted with do the best with what they have available to them. Unfortunately Utah is behind compared to where we originally came from academically.

Teachers, principal, and part-time assistants are all wonderful and approachable. Love that the Arts have made a come-back; children have art, music, PE, and science (upper grades) each week with a teacher specialist. Children are encouraged to do their best, and "Be a buddy not a bully." My children always look forward to going to school each day! This school has an added challenge of housing two behavior units which have incredible teachers/assistants with lots of heart working with these students.
