It's been ok. The classes are large and children are disciplined to the extreme. A note in your CJ, loss of recess, and loss of fun friday for 1 redirection? Give me a break.

Disappointing and mediocre. Basis has decent marketing and talks a big game, but most of the students don't belong there and those that do are subject to rife social issues from the kids who don't and teachers who have little training, experience, and some shouldn't even be there. This school has a great idea and terrible execution. It's unfortunate, especially for the children who do need greater academic challenge than standard public school. The social problems and lack of administrative experience from the lowest to the highest levels, including what is developmentally appropriate, will do this school in before it gets up momentum unless they take serious strides to get it together.

The work-load at BASIS is challenging but this is one of the main reasons we decided to come to BASIS and we have not regretted it at all! We were assigned a counsellor at the beginning, who helped our child transition into the new system, get organized and get familiarized with the BASIS process. After the expected initial adjustment period, our kid has thrived at BASIS so far. We appreciate all the work that the administration and faculty is putting into the education of the youngsters. The teachers seem to really care and, in addition to providing subject-specific help, most of them are involved in a number of extra-curricular activities. (Being surrounded by smart, motivated people with diverse passions and interests is a definite plus for the kids.) We have also noted that our child has become more self-driven and more responsible for his own actions and education. We definitely appreciate the focus on self-discipline as it allows us no step back and not micromanage every aspect of his life. We believe he is not only learning a lot of factual information, but also a lot of organizational skills that would benefit him as a life-long self-driven learner...Is BASIS a smooth sail or a walk in the park? No it is not, but neither is life. The kids are not here for the purpose of making easy straight As. They are here to strive, to learn from their mistakes...and ultimately excel because of their own volition and hard work. Teaching work ethic and organizational skills is one of BASIS’s strong points. As a new school it has also invested a lot in building a community, with a very strong parent BOOSTER organization and wonderful front-desk people, always happy and willing to assist. We do hope that the BASIS model perseveres and that BASIS retains all of its wonderful teachers and staff. Thank you for caring, for proving high standard of education, and having high expectations of our children! After all, one grows when one is challenged to go beyond what one considers his/her limitations. While the kids are not pampered they do get sufficient support. Understandably, each person/family is different and this is our very subjective view of BASIS. That being said, we feel that in the case of our son it has been a good match.

Our kids came from the public school system. We enrolled our students last year, and have found that if you have kids that do not come from an already advanced status at their previous school they can have a VERY hard time with the curriculum at Basis. THE HOMEWORK IS INSANE! It is done usually by 10:00 PM each night, and this is supposed to be where they are taking it easy on the kids. From what I was told a few weeks from now they are going to increase the work load. I agree Basis has a very challenging and rigorous work routine, and this can be very beneficial for the students who were already on that level, but what happens with the ones who need more help? Who love this school environment, but can't keep up? Well I'll tell you what happens. The teachers eventually lose interest in your kid. They send you email after email of their concerns and suggest to re-evaluate your presence at Basis. When the students ask for help in class they are told to put their hand down. Per the teachers they will not be taking any questions as they expect your child who not only already spends the entire evening on homework at home they are also expected to come to the afterschool hours with their questions (which they have to recall by memory as they are not given enough time to write them down) The most ridiculous response so far this year that I have heard was when my son rose his hand and asked the teacher “Can you please repeat that?. You’re speaking way to fast.” was then told “Well…this is a college prep school” and she moved on WITHOUT repeating… As far as my questions in my responses back to their emails they end up offering a pretty generic solution. Eventually they try to get you to move your kids out of Basis. "Why?" you ask? It's because Basis prides itself on a 100% success rate. If your child hinders that success rate they’d prefer you move on. We felt like every teacher/staff member was rooting for us to leave the school. The sad part is I wondered if we were the only ones. Well, we weren't. It turns out after talking to about a handful of other parents they too were struggling with these same issues. I however have been the only one to comment or bring it to anyone’s attention. I just wish Basis did more to keep all their students, and not just the ones who get them a shiny gold star. Word to the wise: Research this school first before registering!!

Background: My child currently goes to Basis North and is one of a group of students with the highest GPA. I moved her from public school to Basis because she, at the beginning of each school year, would consistently score above what was required for students at the end of the year. She was in essence 'left alone' by teachers who had to focus on students who needed more help passing STAAR tests. The Good: The curriculum is stellar at this school! My child absolutely thrived on the curriculum. She learned more at this school in 5th grade than I ever did throughout high school. No major complaints about the teachers although some (not many) could use some tweaking. The Bad: WAY TOO MUCH HOMEWORK!!! The amount of homework given is frankly quite ridiculous! It boggles my mind how much work they are given. During the school year my daughter had homework all week long; she did homework on weekends so she can stay afloat during the week. If she missed a weekend of homework to have some fun with friends then the following week ended with some very long nights. I really HATE the idea that my child has to forgo sleep or fun for more school work! There are NO studies that show large amounts of homework is beneficial for any child. In fact, studies have shown that excessive amounts of homework can be detrimental! Conclusion: Given the good/bad, I have to give the school an average score. I have chosen to keep my child at the school through the 8th grade but will reassess for the high school years. I am leaning toward putting my child back in public school during high school because colleges require more than just good grades to get in; many also require service hours and it will be a sure impossibility to add those hours to all the activities and homework she currently has.
