I am very disappointed with my experience at this school! As an educator and a professional, working with people, is to always be mindful of how you treat people. No matter what they are there for, they will always leave remembering how they were treated. The staff at The Rice School should be recommended to attend classes such as communication skills, social service, compassion and fatigue, human service, etiquette workshops, and have the personality of an educator eager to teach other then just put a grade down in a grade book.

Not good and staff who may be parents themselves should treat other people children as they would want someone to treat their child.

I don't particularly care for the way the teachers and staff speak to the children. It was only after I started to spending more time at the school that I understood why my, once so happy to learn, son didn't want to go back. Some of the staff and teachers at the school feel like they can get away with anything as long as the parent is not there. So, they will do and say pretty much anything to the students and then deny it when they are approached about it. I am very disappointed in the way that they treat their students during lunch and at recess. Why wouldn't kids be able to talk to their friends during lunch? I can understand keeping the noise level down but keeping them from talking at all is outrageous. This is the only time they can sort of unwind during the school day, aside from recess, so why not let them have 20 mins of free laughter and conversation. Instead they are threatened and told that no matter who talks next the entire class will have to eat in silence for the next 2 days or so. Who does that to kids? Not mention they have only one lady that runs the gym and she is not a kid / people person at all. Conversation with her is so combative and defensive you can't help but to think she is hiding something. She has no idea how to interact with kids or their parents for that matter. If I had a way to record what was being said and done in these classrooms I think a large number of parents would be very shocked.I can only hope that the upper administration staff will start to look into some of the things happening around the school and make some changes or at least start addressing it.

Beautiful school! However..... Behavior at the school in all grade levels has been steadily getting worse, There is more concern with how the school looks than how the kids act. Instead of writing up the kids who act badly, Discipline seems to be "ALL kids will be punished with either removal of privileges or extra work for all." I've heard stories from my child as well as other kids and their parents. It is a STEM school but doesn't have the needed classes to make it different than any other neighborhood school. Getting good teachers is hit or miss. There are some very caring teachers, but I have seen a lot of teacher turn over and it always seems that the good teachers are the ones to leave. Because it is a magnet school, if your home school is really really bad and The Rice School offered your child a spot, take it. BUT STAY INVOLVED and do not expect a true STEM school. As for me, my child will not be returning. I must add, my child is an 'A/B' GT student with no discipline issues.
