Field Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

We were only there for one year thankfully. The teacher we had was great. I can't comment on the other teachers. The principal was not so great. Arrogant, controlling and has no desire for parent involvement. Parents are not allowed in the building in the morning. I witnessed the staff yelling at the cars and kids in the drop off line which was very unprofessional and inappropriate. The school needs a revamp as the building is worn. The office staff is very unprofessional as well. The school needs a new principal to be a success. I think he is what is keeping this school from being comparable to Travis or Harvard.

This is our first year at Field and we have been pleased with it so far. The teachers are passionate about their jobs and do the best they can with HISD's limited resources and overemphasis on high-stakes testing. The principal has been open to new ideas and the PTO is working hard to make the campus the next school of choice in the Heights. Their music program is also top-notch! The only change I would like to see is more communication between the parents. There is no school directory, which is odd, making it impossible to reach out to my son's friends' families. And there definitely seems to be a lack of community, unlike Harvard and Travis. I'm sure that will change in time, though.

My son attends pre-k and seems to love it. His teacher (Ms. Thomas) is truly beyond phenomenal and just received her masters in education along with juggling being a fulltime teacher as well. My son has responded well with her, and I feel that he will be absolutely prepared for Kinder next year! We will stay at Field as long as we are in the Heights. It is kind of a hidden gem, since schools like Travis are incredibly sought after. Aftercare is extremely affordable (only $10 a week!) and my son adores his aftercare teachers. The only thing that is concerning to me, and the only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because there is no on-campus counselor. My son did deal with some bullying, and I feel like kids in elem. absolutely need to have a counselor to work with them when such issues arise. Hopefully they will get one soon. Other than that- we are proud to attend Field!

This is our first year at Field and my son is in Kindergarten and we have been very pleased. We love his teacher and he was reading at a 1st Grade level within the first few months of school! The school is very good at challenging their students that need it. Beyond that, Field has some really great teachers, the office staff treats you like family and the Principal is open, honest and amenable to reasonable requests. Granted, this school is overlooked by zoned families for the more "desirable" schools in the neighborhood (which are pretty much impossible to get into). Field's test scores are very comparable to those other schools and has an active community organization and PTO that are making great strides to increase awareness of this hidden gem. Is it perfect? No. But what school is? Luckily the administration listens to parents and strives to make it a neighborhood school for everyone. I have no doubt it WILL be the next school of choice in the Heights.

The principal is readily available and open to new ideas and suggestions. The staff is caring and nurturing and while the teachers seem to be overwhelmed sometimes (this is, unfortunately, the case everywhere) they are competent and are academically on par with the more sought-after schools in the area (Harvard or Travis). I agree, HISD should give more support for pick-up and drop-off jams. I am glad that there are involved parents in the PTO and the community organization Friends of Field that are trying to improve the school. Good enrichment activities for kids--Writers in Schools, Recipe for Success, an after school Arts program, an amazing music teacher and Idea Lab is available after school.
