The Westwood School Ratings & Reviews

What I love about the school is they are teaching not only an excellent curriculum but life skills kids need. I used to teach in Catholic and public schools – this environment is different than anything I have experienced. Westwood truly empowers kids to take responsibility for their education and themselves. I went to Catholic grade school and high school. I took St. Louis University courses in high school and entered college as a sophomore. I feel like though I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer – I had a great education. However when I got to college though I knew how to be a student - I was completely unprepared for life without someone telling me what to do next. It was a rough transition to the responsibilities of adulthood. It was not until I was 30 that I finally had the self-confidence and public speaking ability that I witness Westwood kids mastering usually by upper elementary school. I wondered why since I was in Model UN, student council all 4 years, and participated in plays – but I believe it was because it was for the most part adult led and dictated. Westwood gives the kids something that all adults need – self-confidence that they can solve their own problems whether socially or knowledge based. The teacher acts as a guide and resource rather than an all knowing force. The children have been taught self-reliance and empowerment from a young age. They have been entrusted with their learning, their environment, their activities - things adults usually do for them and they know this. Students feel nothing is impossible not because a teacher or parent told them they can or should do it but because they know from their own experience they can. Answers are not “given” as right or wrong - they are explored and part of life experience. To have this instilled in a young person’s mind changes everything for the better. The world needs problem solvers who confidently express their own ideas not test takers who know the right answer. Our child looks forward to learning every day .

We started off at our public school that was rated a 10 ,that was disastrous. Then we spent 2 years at a private christian school and found that it still did not challenge our child who was bored. We now think we have found our forever school in Westwood! It has engaged and challenged our child like no school has ever had. For the first time ever, he is truly happy. We love the montessori/IB curriculum and could not be more satisfied. The entire staff has been outstanding.

The Westwood School has provided my child with the best possible educational environment. They have outdone themselves making us feel welcome and a vital part of their school community, and they truly go the extra mile to ensure that each child meets his/her educational potential. I couldn't be happier.

83 students left the school at the end of the 2014-15 school year. For such a small student body this is a significant amount of loss and indicative of a school-wide problem. Several of these children are now repeating grades at their new schools. Several more are receiving thousands of dollars of tutoring just to bring them UP to grade level. A far, far cry from the promises and sales pitches and assurances we, and so many others, received throughout our time at the school. Do not risk your child's education, or waste your investment, with this school.

I am surprised at some of the reviews I have read about The Westwood School and feel compelled to add my own here. I am not an administrator or a teacher or a governor and I only have experience of the Westwood High School, both my children having previously attended public school, and I am very happy with the academic standards and expectations of Westwood. The IB DP and MYP are rigorous programs of learning and are very demanding, which is why they are so highly recognised worldwide. Parents are the primary educators of our children and we should support and enhance what is taught at school. It is not enough to drop our children off at school each day and then expect them to get an excellent education just because we are paying for it. We must take an interest in what our children are studying and support them with learning in areas that they find difficult. Our children all learn at different rates - mine are slower learners but they are getting to where they need to be. The teachers here have taken the trouble to get to know my children and understand what makes them tick, as a result, my children are happy here and are thriving. There are good and bad teachers in every school and Westwood is no different, but once you have aired your concerns all you can do is to support your child and encourage them to keep working hard. We value the discipline, the curriculum, the opportunities to learn in and out of the classroom and the small class sizes - our children are more involved and more visible - and therefore more engaged - than they ever were in their previous school. We especially value the good manners and independence of the children who attend Westwood and are delighted with the friends our children have. This year's graduating class is testimony to the academic excellence of the school, to the hard-working students and to the teachers and parents who have supported them.
