Harpeth Valley Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

Our son is in second grade at HVES and we've had nothing but good experiences since he started there in kindergarten. The staff caught a speech issue with my son very early and worked with him until it improved. They communicated and educated us on the process the entire way through. We have a very spirited child and his teachers and the other schools staff have all been wonderful to him and he feels good about himself going there. I would highly recommend this school to others in the area.

My child has been at this school 4 years now, and I have learned the good and the bad. Sure they get higher test scores, that's the good, but the bad is the way they get there. Every year I hear from my son's teachers about him not being 'able' to finish work, and I got a little fed up and started talking to other parents and inquiring about the amount of work they give the kids. As it turns out, many many parents are begging teachers to give less classwork so their children will be able to finish. Sadly, most teachers there take away recess time for the kids not finishing, and make them finish during that tiny little 30 minutes of recess. This doesn't leave the kids refreshed to go back and do more work, but try explaining that to any teacher at this school. I inquired about just how many children don't finish their class work and its about a third each day, that many children not able to go to recess. I also inquired about the amount of work given, and it is more and more as the school year goes on. My child stopped even trying to finish because he knew that he couldn't, so even less work was being completed. Homework is another story, it is about 1-2 hours each night, every night, and projects on top of that. So anything extra you would like to do with your child while they are a student at HVE will not be possible. I'm glad my son is being pushed a little, but if I could go back, I would not have moved here for this school. I hope the principal reads this and takes it to heart. Grades and test scores are wonderful, but not at this expense. For all this work, they could at least teach another language, but they do not.

This is generally a good school as far as public schools go. My son has been there 3 years now. My only real complaint is about the office staff. Reading the reviews here, and talking with other parents, I've learned that I'm not the only parent who has run into the hatefulness and lack of professionalism in the main office, and this is not the principal, this is the FOUR women who work in the main office. Why there needs to be four employees in there is beyond me, but the level of rudeness I've run into when I've gone in there has been more than I've ever dealt with anywhere. They've been rude to me, and also rude to others who have come in and hateful on the phone when I have been in there waiting for something. There is a new principal now, and I really wish she would consider letting a few of them go, as there definitely does not need to be four people working in there anyway. My hope is that they read this and understand that when a parent walks into that office, you don't know what they've already gone through that day or what they're needing help with, and there is never any reason to be unprofessional or rude to them.
