Humboldt Middle School Ratings & Reviews

This school is sub-par. If you have any choice in where you live, move outside of Humboldt. ALL of the surrounding districts are better. I have taught in Trenton, Gibson County, and Madison County, and my children have attended all of those districts as well. Humboldt is by far the worst. The principal of HMS is completely ineffective at handling any problems that arise, doesn't deal well with parents even in the best of circumstances, and cannot communicate well in writing or face-to-face. She is the weakest link in an overall weak district. Also, our experience with special education has been especially bad. I had to constantly stay on them to make sure my daughter's IEP was followed.

The grading system is a constant frustration. I feel it makes it hard for children to feel successful sometimes. I see a lot of teacher involement, even outside of school hours, and the principal spends a lot of time with the students, but a quiet kid could get lost. We sometimes are inundated with fundraisers because the system is underfunded. A working parent may find it difficult to keep their child on track and still work. A lot of time is required of parents, sometimes at inconvenient times (especially if you work). There are many oportunities for individual students to shine and acknowledgment is key-our local paper helps there, but once again the grading system hinders the children in that respect.
