We thought Mercymount was a quality school when we first started. The reality is it’s a shell of a school. A beautiful building and nice families but academically it’s failing. They do not offer anything above and beyond a education I would define as mediocre at best. There are many other choices for a lot less money. There is new leadership after the teachers pushed out the last principal. Unfortunately, the teachers are still at the school. Unfortunalty, Mercymount is not capable of implementing a strong academic program.

As the year comes to a close I thought I would reflect back on our child’s time in Pre-K. I’ve spoken with a number of parents whose children are in the early education program at Mercymount, and all have been very pleased. I count myself as one of those parents. The approach in Pre-K was very much learn by experimentation and exploration. Whether it was designing a plan on paper before building a block tower, formulating a theory as to whether a magnet will stick to a particular surface, or predicting whether an object will float, the teacher always focused the children on critical thinking allowing them to learn from the outcome of experiments. There was also a great mix of natural science including diagraming of flower parts, dissection of apples, growing of plants, and learning the life cycle of a butterfly in class by raising a few in the classroom from egg to adult. All of this hands on learning was tied nicely to various curriculum topics including families, habitats, weather, animal lifecycles, and more. Our child also left with a great foundation in reading, the ability to write basic sentences, and read (with some assistance) Level-1 readers. Learning aside, perhaps what’s most important is our child’s genuine interest to get to school, there was never a morning struggle about going to school. I credit that to the interesting and nurturing environment that was offered everyday by the Pre-K teacher and her assistant.

Mercymout has been a very long and disappointing experience. The principal Dr.Hawley doesn’t do anything and takes long family vacations during the school and doesn’t address any of the issues. This leaves the Vice Principal in charge (Mrs.Jalette). She favors the academically strong students and tries to find as many gripes as possible from some children. The elementary teachers are mostly good but the middle school teachers are very intimidating and too hard. Middle school teachers also play the favoritism game and pick on the students who are struggling or once in a while forget things. Mercymount was a good school but now it is steadily deteriorating. Many parents and children in the school feel that their children are being picked on and hated on by the teachers and staff. I would not recommend Mercymount to any incoming middle school students.

Took our son out, was the best decision we've ever made. If walls could talk. The bullying starts from the top, that's for sure. Ask the teachers outside of school, they'll tell you. If you're thinking of spending (too much) $$$ on a private school education, do yourself a favor, look elsewhere.
