Swarthmore-Rutledge School Ratings & Reviews

one of the reasons my family moved to Swarthmore was because of all the positive things we heard about the district. It is true that the parent teacher organization is excellent! The parents at the school are very involved and hold many fundraiser and events for the students. The community is excellent and for such a smaller district it is surprisingly diverse. That Being said I am not so impressed with the school. For starters my son who is in 2nd grade is in a class of 23. The class rooms are older and they are small not providing the students much movement. You would think with the high amount of school taxes we pay that the class size would be at the most 20. I also have a huge problem with recess. Students are only given one short 15min recess a day. I find this to be way too litte especially with all the research pointing to the benefits of recess in elementary schools. The communication with staff is poor especially when it comes to students who have been referred to IST or have IEP, 504 plans. This could be due the poor student to teacher ratio. Way too many students to follow up on and not enough staff. My son is defiantly learning some great things and the crucullum is strong but the way things are taught seems very "old school" . Way too much sitting at desks listing to the teacher lecture and not enough exploration, cooperative learning and stations. This also could be due to the lack of space in the classroom and class size. All together I am not very impressed with the school. I think the schools good reputation comes from the excellent parents and community but the school itself is probably less than average. If I could afforded to send my son to another school, I would in a heart beat.

This school is the best I have two children in the school, and I have had a great experiences with both of them . The academics is great and teaching my children to have a passion for learning and they love to go to school everyday. The teacher's here you can tell they really have a passion for teaching it really is a very special place. Dr. Tuck the principal is a very special person as well filling the school with love and happiness. I am so grateful, that this has been my children's elementary school experience. They really get my kids and bring out he best in them.

We moved from out of state this past fall. My child's transition was wonderful. The teachers and famines are very welcoming. The academics, learning environment, and opportunities are exceptional. Extremely pleased and so happy we found SRS!

This beautiful old stone building used to be the home of Swarthmore High School. From the moment you step inside you know you have come to a great place to learn. The classrooms are spacious and bright. The walls are filled with student artwork - temporary displays and permanent exhibits like mosaics and sculptures. And then there are the people... Wonderful, warm teachers who compete valiantly for positions and stay on for decades as they hone their craft, a principal who somehow knows the names of all the students and parents, an army of secretaries ready to help deliver a forgotten lunch or track down a teacher. But most importantly this school is filled with happy, engaged students. Kindness is part of the curriculum at this school and it shows in student interactions These kids are energetic and silly but also careful with each other. I can't imagine sending my children anywhere else for school - public or private!
