This school is a very happy place - where older kids are encouraged to mentor younger kids. Some examples: Younger kids get assigned older kids as reading buddies. Also, RES field day is run almost entirely by the 5th grade class. They do a great job encouraging and guiding the younger kids through the events. When I walk through the school, I notice kids of all ages saying 'hi' to each other in the hallway. My two boys have love going school and have loved there teachers so far. At the same time, their teachers each had a different personality and teaching style and I certainly haven't seen any "fear" of upsetting the principal and/or the administration. To be fair... I have heard of a few parents complaining about the principal and but it seems to me most of those complainers seem to want Main Line "white glove" service that you may get for $25K/year at one of the many area private schools. I know several parents with children with special needs and the school seems to go above and beyond to help them. RES's test scores are great (but they don't teach just to excel on those tests) and the vast majority of the children (and parents) are very happy. When I saw one star reviews - based on isolated experiences all on the same date - I felt compelled to speak up. I think some of the prior comments about the lack of student body divesity are fair - but the school goes out of its way to stress and teach about diversity.

The school does not protect children from bullying and stresses academics above citizenship and behavior. While the academics are strong the level of homework is far beyond other districts such as Tredyffrin where we moved from. If a child needs extra help, you will not find it here. They have programs but they are mostly ineffectual. There are some studies that indicate increased homework does not improve education, however this school appears to be unaware of this data and sends home sometimes as much as 8 pages in 2nd grade. The teachers are good; but trapped with poor administration making them less effectual. The principal for Radnor not a nice person; If you have an issue she will sweep it under the rug if she thinks she can.

OK this school is better than many public schools; but fell very short of our expectations when you consider the tax base they have to work with. We moved from Tredyffrin and it was much much better. First the principal cared at Tredyffrin, at Radnor she is far more focused on how she looks than helping children and she is downright rude to parents and children. Second the teachers at Tredyffrin are given the power to really helps kids; at Radnor they appear afraid of upsetting the administration and principal. They can help kids who fall behind but the teacher that is dedicated to helping kids with reading problems is just plain mean. Is that really what child who is struggling needs to put up with. I putting my children in private schools (benchmark and baldwin) and they did much better. Beware before you move to this district.
