To hear my son’s teacher tell him, “I love you,” on a daily basis is a rare and special treat. The level of compassion and passion the teachers have is astounding. They are skilled at introducing the latest research-based best practices in education and supporting social-emotional development, while simultaneously leveraging their many years of experience to their advantage. My son is excited to go to school in the morning, and sad on days when he doesn’t. The school does an excellent job setting a strong foundation that extends to their academic experiences and experiences in life, early childhood and beyond.

We have been at PMFS for almost three years and are so happy with the choice we made for our son and our family. For many years we kinda wrote off PMFS based solely on its location at Germantown & Butler Pikes. After hearing many great things about the school, though, we went to see it and were amazed by how large and green it is. With a background as an independent school educator, I had very clear ideas about what kind of school I wanted for my children. A nurturing community where everyone is respected, a rigorous and creative academic program that embraces the tenets of progressive education, strong teachers who would really get to know my children, a robust arts program, a close-knit and inclusive community of families. We have found all this and more at PMFS. The Head of School is providing strong, warm, accessible leadership for the school. The new building that houses the Library and 1st and 2nd grades is beautiful! The tuition definitely feels pricey, although it s on par with most of the other local independent schools. (I suggest everyone apply for financial aid.) I also would like to see more racial/ethnic diversity in terms of both families and faculty.

Here are some of the things we love about PMFS: ~In 2nd grade students are required to take one year of violin provided by the school. ~3rd grade makes their own toy boats and takes them to the Maryland National Seashore to the Science center at Asseteague and does three days of studying marine life and water. They set the boats free and like in the book 'Pathway to the Sea' they mark them with contact information to see if they can discover the path they take. ~4th grade offers a math curriculum through circus arts. Kids learn to climb the silks, trapeze, juggling, tight rope walking, and recess is full of children on unicycles. The kids create and perform a three day circus which teaches them some of the most important lessons of life: perseverance and courage. ~5th grade there is a Mexican exchange where the kids become hosts for a carefully matched 'buddy' from Cuernavaca, and then for two weeks in May our children go to Mexico. ~6th there is a brand new musical or play written by the extraordinary Music/Drama teacher that the kids produce. It is truly a remarkable school and cannot recommend it highly enough. Worth every penny!

At PMFS kids learn through active discovery and hands-on projects around the beautiful campus. Many projects and assignments are student-driven and teachers value students' individual creative contributions. There is a strong emphasis and social and emotional development here, with dedicated time for teaching interpersonal skills and resolving conflict among classmates. In addition to a solid academic foundation, at every grade level the curriculum involves fostering more independence and responsibility in the children, starting in first grade with an overnight camping trip. My son was nervous about the trip, but once the class planned and prepared their meals, shared their fears, and learned about the experience from older students, he was ready to go. Students then build on this initial growth experience by meeting greater challenges each year, culminating in a 2-week trip to Mexico in 5th grade. The school lets kids be kids--through their emphasis on creative expression and discovery--while challenging them personally and supporting them to meet those challenges. Can 4th graders put on a circus? Are 5th graders ready to travel to Mexico? At this school, absolutely.

As a parent, I love that my child has been learning creative problem solving skills at PMFS. Math, for example, is about more than just learning to do calculations. They learn how numbers work, and apply critical thinking skills to real world situations. My child absolutely loves school now, because he has learned how to enjoy learning. There's also an emphasis on learning how to work collaboratively with others, rather than on just sitting quietly and doing independent work (though they do that some too). This has worked especially well for my child, who has is generally shy, and has developed a wonderful self confidence at Plymouth. I have talked to admissions people in other area schools about how students from Plymouth do in their schools. They all told me that Plymouth kids do very well, both academically and socially. One person told me that Plymouth kids tend to become class leaders at their school. Finally, our experience as a family at Plymouth has been fantastic. Everyone that works there is open, friendly and accessible. I particularly love the new Head, Sarah Sweeney Denham.
