This school is what we would call a small business. They lie on there website and when you visit. They told us that the school day was over at 3:00 PM, and then once we gave them our $30,000 check they told us that every student is required to stay an additional 3 and a half hours everyday until 6:30 PM. They say there is 7 in a class, more like 17! And the school is a prison-cum-mental institution where everyone there has police and criminal history. Most students there smoke and do drugs. The teachers have absolutely no credentials or training whatsoever, and are unprofessional and don't know how to handle these children. It is a troubled teen school. Plain and simple.

Highly disappointing. Appointed as a Learning Support faculty member in 2016. I soon learned that a significant majority of my colleagues possessed little if any real training (i.e. pre-service programs at accredited colleges/universities) or any professional state-level certifications in Special Education. Hence, the manner in dealing with academic and behavioral issues common to students with disabilities was frequently ad hoc and rarely aligned with standard research-based strategies. IEP data, conclusions, and recommendations were rarely considered because without a specialized background, the information presented too much of a challenge to understand and use. Attempts to reverse this trend with extra faculty support were often met with indifference (it was considered "too much extra work.") The blatant hostility directed at students with behavioral issues was a reflection of ingrained, yet professionally discredited, methods from 40 to 50 years ago. The "gatekeepers" of the prevailing school culture exhibited no willingness to progress beyond that. I believe most parents are only tuned into what's apparent on the surface (grades and trimester reports) and fail to closely examine the process and what some of their boys have to endure on a daily basis to achieve some level of success. For some, the price of that success seems to be excessive.

When my son needed a place very close to admissions deadlines, Phelps came through and my son just graduated from a very nurturing environment from both faculty and staff. I'll recommend this school to parents with children who have a challenge with confidence, learning and social skills.

Phelps is a unique place, As a student who was never a big fan of schools I was able to thrive at Phelps.Over my 7 years as a student I participated fully in the school life and activities, found my passions and interests. As the CEO/Founder of several large and successful companies with offices in 11 states and doing business worldwide I recognize that much of what has prepared me for that came from my time at Phelps.

Phelps' diverse student body and caring faculty and staff enable its students to find success, become more independent, and to be prepared for college and its academic and social challenges. The mixture of students who hail from all over the world and have come to this small town in PA for various reasons is often times remarkable as the chemistry on campus creates a tight-knit community that feels very safe for all of the boys.
