The Haverford School Ratings & Reviews

Last year was my only year at Haverford and it was terrible. Whether it be the horrible teachers, the bullying, the drug problems or the false brotherhood. First, from the outside this school is exquisite they have tons of playing fields as well as squash courts and tennis courts. The campus is also very well maintained with staff always keeping it up to par. The campus is similar to a mini-college, but that is one of the few positives. Everywhere, the school has murals, banners and engravings stating how the school stands for respect, honesty, courage etc., but that is all false.I knew the school had a competitive environment coming in, but I didn't realize the bullying would be this bad, especially to someone who is very athletic and talented, especially in one sport. Your own teammates would mock you or even pick on you. I suppose this problem stems from the large amount of cliques this school has. They are setup since these kids have been young and its impossible for you to get into. Once, kids would get up from the table when I sat down or through crude slurs towards me. Not a conducive environment to learn at. I guess there mentality of "becoming a man" is learning to get used to bullying. The all-boys atmosphere improves bullying. They don't even have a system in place for you to get help when you are struggling emotionally, it was an obviously problem and they did nothing about it, even when my parents contacted them. While some of the teachers here are very nice and helpful, others are absolutely dreadful. One teacher would call kids names like "clueless" or "confused". He even once told someone they need to seek a "physiatrist". Who in their right mind thinks that is right to do, were in the 21st Century not the 1970's. That seem teacher even let me get picked on in class when I had trouble explaining my reasoning. Ridiculous. Some teachers just let the football players off the hook from doing work or curb their grades. The school also has a major drug and alcohol problem. I have seen kids at school, obviously intoxicated. Even for a school that touts their hard curriculum, it was not very rigorous. Kind of ironic for the type of school it really is. It's obvious that The Haverford School is not a good school for learning. There is constant bullying, rude teachers and everything is oriented around sports. I would avoid this place.

Outstanding. Not the school it was under Dr. Severinghaus but still the class of the InterAc. Current headmaster tarnishes the school's brand

My son started at Haverford in 9th grade after going to a public school for 5 years. He loves the school and does not want to miss a single day. When being asked about bullying he stated that this is not an issue at all. He loves the atmosphere, the activities, and the academics exposing him to different activities and view points.

The Haverford school focuses on athletics before anything else as a way to garnish prestige for a school I've come to know as a $36,000 A range grade. It is difficult for a student to do poorly at haverford as grades are inflated and acidemic rigor lowered in order to meet the ability of recruited athletes. We also did not enjoy the all boys atmosphere as it had the opposite effect on our child. An all male education was touted as a way to let our son grow up independent of social pressures associated with co-education. However, once presented with real world, which is not segregated, he was unsure how to handle it. I've talked with other parents of older students who've viewed the same effects from time to time where the alpha male, dissmissive mindset comes out. Given the choice again I would not consider Haverford again and would skip right to coeducation as we are at now. Maybe this atmosphere and athletic prowess is beneficial to some but it did not prepare our son for the acedemic rigor of the school he now attends, nor did it prepare him for the reality of life as initially promised as we wrote the check.

Haverford is not the school it once was....and I am not just talking about the major drug issues that have received national coverage. The problem is resources. The upper school seems to get more than its fair share of resources and support which now includes crisis management and drug counseling. The lower school enrollment has dropped off significantly ....so the cut corners are evident. Until there is a major paradigm shift, I would never recommend it.
