Great school, relatively diverse compared to surrounding schools, academically rigorous, whole child centered.

My son attended The Montessori School (TMS) from 3 years to 12 years of age, attending from pre k to grade 6. His experience was incredibly powerful, prepared him well with both academic and practical life skills and helped him become an independent, curious thinker. Now that he's graduated into his new middle school, these abilities have helped him transition well into his new environment. As parents, we sought a school that offered our son individual learning at his pace, room to grow and challenge himself and a highly engaged, supportive peer group. While we felt he was experiencing all of this while at TMS, this review is also about how we see the benefits as we watch him in his new school and see how well prepared he was for the next stage of learning. The community is kind - a diverse community of over 14 cultures represented sharing global traditions and celebrations, the teachers are authentic in everyway - deep skills and command of the curriculum delivered through incredibly effective materials, the head of school is engaged and accessible - understanding how to run a school while looking into the future to keep the school cutting edge, the board is passionate and creative - long range thinkers to advance the mission and committed staff - to wear many hats in a small independent school to deliver a great experience. At a minimum, a visit to the school should be on every parent's list for those seeking a unique, impactful and relevant elementary education for their child.

The toddler guide that has been around a long time is excellent and experienced. They had one that left the school which was pretty awful, my son came home with band aids on his face from cuts, etc. CH guides are a mixed bag. My son was with someone great, I had friends who were not happy with their child's CH guide. Always pressuring you to donate to the school which is completely annoying, if I have money left over after paying the insane tuition bills and I WANT to donate I will. I don't need several emails pressuring me to do so. The grounds are beautiful, but there are definitely hits and misses with this school.

We chose TMS for our child because we wanted an authentic Montessori education for her, and it has been the best decision we have made. Every single employee, guides and staff, are supportive and we are confident that our child is getting exactly what she needs. The guides keep an open line of communication at all times. If there ever is an issue we can be sure that it will be communicated to us immediately. These guides, from the toddler program all the way through Upper El, consistently illustrate their commitment to the children's well being. I drop my child off everyday knowing that she is not only in the best hands, but most capable as well.

I led the HSA group at TMS for two years. I am also a former Board of Trustee Member and a trained Montessori Guide. We withdrew our 4 children from the school because we feel that the school cannot be trusted to act in the best interest of a child’s education or well-being. TMS fosters a culture of retention (holding children back), not based on standardized academic benchmarking data, but rather on gut feelings, anecdotal evidence, and whether the child acts “young” for their age. A preponderance of evidence in the published educational literature suggests no academic benefit to be had with the retention of a child – only psychological damage. TMS Administration should know this but they do it anyway – more tuition money. We are now trying to undo that damage in our child. The TMS Administration routinely oversteps boundaries and expertise by recommending therapy for children, or suggesting that a child has a psychological disorder (no one in the administration is a physician). These unethical practices are increasingly causing families to leave. Our situation is not an isolated incident.
