Scotland isn't the worst elementary school, but it isn't the best. Positives: One of the better academically performing schools in the district. Teachers clearly care about student performance and will do anything to support that. Principal is great, and the facility itself is nice. For the most part, they welcome parent input and collaboration. What needs improvement:Many teachers are nice, but only a select few are great and take an empathetic approach to teaching. I am grateful that my child doesn't really have any special needs or issues. But if you are a parent of a behaviorally challenging child (or even not), expect the issues to worsen or peer issues to arise. Not quite bullying, but there is a culture of disrespect at this school (between the students themselves and teachers). Classroom management tactics are often out of touch, not logical, and somewhat "old school." I find it perplexing that the behavior issues at the school have worsened, and yet many of the staff continue their ineffective punitive approach: Have an issue with a peer? Walk the pole at recess. Disrespectful? Walk the pole at recess. Break a classroom rule? Yes, you guess it... walk the pole at recess (or write down the rule you broke on paper dozens/hundreds of times like it's 1955.) I don't mean to snark, but it's a bit ridiculous. And clearly not effective. The lunch aides are the worst offenders and easily overwhelmed by large groups of children. They have no management training. My child also witnessed a teacher discipline a child who was talking out in class by making him stand up and then asked the entire class what his punishment should be. Disciplining by shaming is just disgusting and does nothing but create resentment in that child (who may further act out). It's child psychology 101, and I just don't understand these approaches to classroom management. The principal, however, is a very nice, kind man and adopts a more positive reinforcement approach to discipline. I can tell he tries hard to change the old culture of the building and bring it up to a more modern approach to education. Ironically, he is very respected by the students. If more of the teachers followed his suit, I think they would see more positive changes in their classroom and be more respected by students.

There are many good teachers at this school, which earn the school 3 stars. If you anticipate your child having no issues and being an normal student, you may love Scotland until fifth grade. Then the team in fifth can be destructive, even if you have a child that loves school.
