Woodstock Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

I'm sure it's a good school if you have a typical child with no behavioral or learning challenges, but if your child is anything outside of completely ordinary, it's not a good fit.

I'm sure this is a great school for an average student. But if you have child with a disability, run FAR FAR away. We have had the worst experience with the school violating federal law and refusing to follow my child's IEP.

A successful school requires involved parents, teachers, principal, faculty, students, and supporting organizations - Woodstock meets these criteria! However, incoming parents and students must understand that unlike other schools, success at Woodstock requires additional academic, social, and extracurricular activities. For example, many Woodstock parents actively participate in their child's homework and provide additional academic involvement via computerized mathematical practice, Mandarin worksheets, Mandarin aftercare, reading programs like the award winning Multnomah County library Summer Reading Program, etc. Parents also encourage cultural competency be enrolling their child in weekend or after school Chinese dance classes, additional language training, martial arts, and tutoring. Parents embrace, attend, volunteer, and participate in Chinese holidays, Shu Ren, and cultural experiences. Learning Mandarin is a difficult and time consuming activity, but for the student there are or will be tremendous rewards! , [d sh x y ng y y z zh qi n j n] In study, concentration is required, for every character understood is worth a thousand pieces of gold.

I had one child in the much-lauded Mandarin immersion program and one child who started Mandarin but switched to the English-only neighborhood program in 3rd grade. I have to say that it was like they were in different schools. The staff do all they can to keep a "one school" experience, and with limited resources and space, they are doing a superb job. But there are many challenges with the English-only program. My 3rd grader is in a class with 32 kids. That's not teaching, that's chaos control. Parents with kids on the Mandarin side tend to be much more invested and involved with PTA as well as Shu Ren, the nonprofit support community for immersion families.

Every school tends to have one or two bad teachers. This school is the same but overall the teachers are great. The current principal is way better and more understanding than the previous one (thank god she is gone, hooray). I am sure under the new leadership this school is going to be an outstanding school
