William Walker Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

I used to go to this school in the 1980s and loved it. It's not the same like it used to be. Thing I don't like it the school filters only low income families into this school instead of having a more variety of people so they can get the extra funding for poor test scores. My son was in sped ed and was always getting in trouble and going to the thnking room which I knew nothing about cause he had communication problems. My youngest son I transferred out of that school to a much better rated school and he's excelling now. The office staff would treat us like we didn't speak english cause my kids were hispanic.

The last several years all 3 of my children have been excelling each year. Comunication between parents and school staff is definitely not lacking. It seems that the staff gets to know all students for who they are and encourages the kids to be individuals. I have had staff let me know when my kid is struggling and they even let you know when they are not anymore. I have not just had you kid is in trouble calls from the principal but she has also called to let me know when one of my children are shinning brighter then usual. Staff is good at placing children in different programs they offer. Especially the counselor she is awesome at finding programs for the star students to get a challenge. Long story short I love my children and have the school and staff to thank for helping them become who they are growing to be.

Our daughter left a private school in second grade to attend William Walker. She was immediately welcomed into the class and made friends quickly. The faculty do an excellent job at meeting kids where they are and challenging them to strive for success. In particular, our daughter was given opportunities to participate in TAG programs in both math and reading. The teachers were especially caring and very professional. She completed 5th grade and is now an 8th grader at a local highly ranked private school. She was very well prepared and is top in her class. We have another child now attending a Beaverton school nearby that has very high ratings. Unfortunately, we have found that this school does not offer the same opportunities our daughter had at William Walker.

My kids have been at William Walker since 2009. They have had a great experience - smaller classes than many of the other schools in the area thanks to Title I funds, excellent teachers who go out of their way to meet the needs of every child, and a very positive atmosphere in the school. They have been well prepared for middle school; my older child had a much easier transition than many of the kids we knew from other schools because of the preparation and independence built in by the teachers. My second child will move on to middle school next year and easily qualified for the Summa program (test scores at 99th percentile). The low test scores at the school are due to the many children who are poor and who don't speak English at home. The school does a good job with kids who come from all backgrounds. Additionally, as "minority" white children in a school that is largely Hispanic (with a growing population of Arabic and Somali speakers), my kids have learned a ton about diversity and poverty. No, they didn't get invited to as many birthday parties, but their long term emotional and social intelligence has improved for the better.

I believe that William Walker has the most caring staff I've personally met. I'm the grandmother of a student and he lives with me. My personal experience is long and varied as a pre-k teacher ,parent of three children two having severe learning disabilities and I volunteered for all three thru middle school in several local district's. My grandson is blessed to do very well in school his teachers have recognised this and sent special homework so he is not bored and still learning. They have an after school program in partnership with Northwest Impact that rivals any private schools. The only thing lacking is money do you have some to spare ? The families for the most part are very low income and can't afford to put much money or time into the school. As for myself I'm disabled and the bus can't get me close enough. So if you have money or time you could sure help some great kids.
