West Sylvan Middle School Ratings & Reviews

April 03, 2018 Submitted by a community member
I attended West Sylvan from 2005-2008. Middle school is a difficult time for everyone, and this is a fairly large school, so those factors probably affect the ratings here. The actual academics/curricula were excellent and were probably the highlight of the experience. Teachers were a mixed bag--some very good and others counting the days until retirement. Socially it was a difficult place to be if you didn't come from money, as the demographic was overwhelmingly white and upper middle class. Students who are more sensitive, or who have trouble fitting in, would probably benefit from a smaller/more diverse school. Other students would probably appreciate the academic rigor and opportunities that come from a large and wealthy school.

ive been here since sixth grade i am now an eighth grader my experience at this school has been pretty sucky. overall about half of my teachers have been decent. i am beyond happy to be leaving west sylvan, i do not recommend if your child has feelings. kids are mean and spread rumors or call you names dont take it the wrong way. it can be hard to find friends or fit in sometimes. this school is great for some kids but from my experience i wouldn't recommend.

Im a seventh grader here and 6th grade was the best and seventh is great too. The teachers are very helpful, I'm in the spanish Immersion. I don't know why people dislike this school. It is great i would recommend this school if you want to learn lots and make tons of friends!

I went to West Sylvan my seventh grade year, and dropped out as soon as I possibly could. There were cliques, bullies, and all kinds of stuck up and rude kids that I couldn't stand to be around. There was WAY too much work for a seventh grader, and the teachers didn't help. I felt like no one cared or even noticed I was there. I reported being bullied countless times only to be told that, "We'll handle it, don't worry," Or, my favorite, just reassurance that I was beautiful and that what kid would even think of picking on someone like me. I don't think that this school is for everyone, and if you're thinking of enrolling, visit the school and check it out first.

I was a student here at West Sylvan 6-8th grade 2008-2012. My teachers were always supportive and constantly offered help FOR FREE before and after school. I did not take this help and still passed with flying colors due to the great teaching. My parents didn't intervene in my homework and I had no tutor and still did very well. The teachers all cared about you, not just about in school troubles or difficulties, but with personal matters that inhibited your learning abilities, and gave due leniency where needed. When students miss school they are expected to make up work; only when kids procrastinate and don't try do they get lower grades. Strong, lifelong morals were taught to us every year by the principle and staff. 70% of students were in the advanced math group, 20% in the most advanced math class, while only 10% are in the STANDARD math group (Math 7th/8th)! The sense of community at West is phenomenal; there are very few mean kids, and an EXTREMELY low rate of bullying. The other negative comments about this school are from not too bright kids WHO CLEARLY GAVE UP; this is the main way to gain a disliking of/from the teachers, who still try to make you try your best.
