Again, we had a great first year and a half but it quickly soured when our son was diagnosed with special learning needs - as Kindergarten began and he was doing more academic work for the first time. The school did nothing to support his special needs or help him adjust. Their efforts were superficial at best. They made comments that suggested to me implicit bias was at play and did not follow through on the strategies we were trying to create together with the school. I think if you fit into the right box then the school is great. Though the level of teacher training and background seems widely varied. But if your child has any special learning needs and is also black this is not the school for you, your child will not get a fair shake (unless maybe you can make a large donation to the school). The leadership and teachers need to go through antiracist training (specifically with respect to implicit bias toward African Americans) and have more training for special learning needs.

My family is thrilled with TIS and are grateful to the teachers and staff who are welcoming, knowledgeable and caring.

We love the International School, from the folks at the front desks, to the staff and teachers. The environment is amazing, inclusive and equitable in all the right ways. We are impressed with how our children are becoming global citizens, knowledgeable and respectful of not just their target language, but all cultures around the world. There are a lot of other language immersion schools out there, but the International School is most impressive in how they used evidence-based practices to improve the learning and social environment. It definitely makes the school standout.

Our family has loved the six years our fifth-grader has been at The International School. Children attending school there become fluent in their track language, either Spanish, Mandarin Chinese or Japanese, as fully developing bilingual students by the end of fifth grade. In that final year, students participate in a two-week immersion program called Capstone in their host country. The growth as global citizens that the children experience while attending this school is remarkable. It is truly visible during the Capstone experience, when the children show their skills as adaptable travelers and guest students and as ambassadors representing the best of the US culture through their excellent performance and behavior. It is also a fantastic time for the children to have hours and hours of fun together playing and exploring the rich offerings of the Capstone experience. Also to note, at least one parent is preferred to attend as chaperone, with flexibility around parents’ commitments. My recommendation: go for at least half, like many parents; it’s an unforgettable trip. Think: It’s being an Extended Field Trip Chaperone for excellent and enriching cultural tourism-with lots of great hours off to enjoy yourself! If you are interested in giving your child the gift of bilingualism, which is so rare in our culture yet so important for our world, consider The International School and it’s International Baccalaureate curriculum for your kid or kids and join the growing group of happy parents and children connected to this excellent School.Excellent! Our family has loved the six years our fifth-grader has been at The International School. We love TIS! It's amazing. Getting to learn another language this way is our gift to them. My husband and I both struggled to learn a second language in middle school. Immersion really works so well. We enrolled our oldest for the year before Kindergarden to get a year of Spanish before public elementary school and we just got hooked. Our oldest daughter is doing so well here. We put our youngest daughter in Chinese because we have so much faith in the school. Neither of us spoke Mandarin a year ago. Currently I'm taking Effective Chinese at the LLoyd Center taught by a former TIS parent so I'm learning Mandarin now but I know it is not needed. I'm not worried about my youngest learning a language so foreign to my family. She will get it just like her sister did. Next year in first grade when homework starts, it isn't much anyways (maybe ten minutes). I figure if she cannot do it, the teacher needs to know, right? It's okay. Homework is not what is important anyways. They are happy at school. They love the extras like library, art, PE, music and garden. They also love the after school classes, International Festival, Talent Show, cultural celebrations, Timed Mile, Run for the Arts and Bingo. We get together frequently with other TIS families. The kid drop-off and pick-up service works. Many families carpool and some even take public transportation or bike to school. I wish they had a middle school. My third grader speaks very good Spanish now. We are excited for her to complete her fifth grade Capstone because the preparation for this trip involves so much public speaking, presentations and research. She will be learning so much beyond just how to speak another language.
