We have had a very positive experience at Cottonwood. There is a great sense of community. The small class sizes and the hands-on, interactive, meaningful experiences are so valuable to their learning.

This school is amazing. The focus on community, science, and the dying topic of civics makes its curriculum and inner culture rich. It is a small school where all of the kids from K-8 are encouraged to teach and work with kids in other classes and of other ages, creating an environment that blurs the age/grade divisions prevalent in other schools. My kinder adores 'his' 8th grader and looks forward to the days she gets to come hang out, to read to him, or they do activities together. Grades take field trips together and work together on certain tasks and lessons, while then receiving grade specific lessons seperately. The entire structure promotes multi-tiered and multi-faceted approaches to learning and education that I haven't seen elsewhere. I have been really amazed by every one who works there - from the educators to the school aides and everyone in the office. The curriculums are well developed and promote and integrate empathy, diversity, and critical thinking. Families and parents are very involved (and are an important part of how the school functions). I can't say enough about CSCS

The kindergarten teacher was ill equipped to deal with a large classroom that was primarily boys, and constantly snapped and / or yelled at children. The handbook states that the school uses a Positive Discipline approach, which was not the case in our experience. There is no support staff at the school - one teaching assistant for all classrooms K-8, one office person who is lovely with the children but not trained to work with them, an accountant who doesn't interact with the children at all, and a Principal / Executive Director who during my son's year assumed the role of both Principal / ED AND Vice Principal / Academic Director (her previous role). The staff is stretched way too thin and the work falls onto the parents who do not seem particularly interested in taking on that role - every task came down to one or two parents begging other parents to please help, and it seemed that many important roles were left unfilled. I think that parents are so burned out from all of the field trips and responsibilities in the classroom (e.g. there is no janitorial service so cleaning the classrooms and school is the job of parents, as is laundry, driving students on field trips, volunteering in the classroom, etc) that they are not motivated to pitch in on the school-wide needs. The special ed team is ineffective and does not listen to parents regarding their children's needs, and the children are ultimately not served at all. In my experience, this school is amazing on paper but falls very short in the execution of its core values, mission and purpose. Unless this school is able to procure funding for more key staff positions, I fail to see how it can succeed.

Parts were delightful, but, most of it was just average schooling that you'd find at any public school. You're wasting time and money if you think this school is massively different from any normal public school. If you want slightly different education, come on in, if you want completely different education, stay away.

My child is thriving at SWCS! He transferred here from a poor situation of bullying, belittling by a teacher, and no movement opportunities, hands-on learning, or fieldtrips. He was very discouraged and no longer wanted to go to school. Now he gets up early in the morning, and is ready to leave before it's time! The teachers are very caring, engaging and enjoy my son for who he is. They encourage him and do not squelch the curiosity and outside-the-box thinking in which his intellectual brain routinely engages...which does not often fly in mainstream schools. SWCS does a great job utilizing their resources outside of the school, and experiential hands-on learning is the norm. The limited play space is not an issue when Southwest Portland is at their doorstep and routinely explored...the nearby parks, Willamette River, walking path, gallery, street car and MAX. It's been a great fit for my child, and I am so happy to have this opportunity for my son.
