Sunnyside Environmental School Ratings & Reviews

My son went to this school in two grade years, I had very high hopes, when we first started, the VP seemed eager to help and everyone seemed very kind, but once my son started, we started to see issues. There is a lot of talk about "the individual" and working together, but we never saw any of this in practice. They had no interest, it seemed from our dealings and talking to others, in individual learning, they preferred children, that happily aimed at the middle of the materials they were teaching. If your child needed more help or was learning above what they were offering in the class, they didn't seem to care, have an interest or have the materials, to do extended teaching, and just left those not in the middle to do nothing. We saw the Music, Art, PE and Cafeteria staff all go out of their ways to work with kids, and some of the staff in these areas, really were seeming to abide the schools ethos so well. These staff members seemed eager to actually help students and to address the mixed needs of the school, and offered brilliant care and learning opportunities. The teachers in the lower grades how ever, were not very effective. A parent who is a teacher, on one of the field trips we chaperoned, was very disappointed, as she found the safety directions offered to the children to be confusing, and not consistently used. In fact we discovered at least one of the teachers, regularly had this issue with the children, in not using clear directions, that lead to confusion in the children in other areas. This made us wonder just how effective she was in teaching in a classroom. We decided to remove our child from Sunnyside, as we noticed, his behavior, learning and interest in learning were all suffering from being at Sunnyside. He met some nice children and enjoyed the outside the main classroom portions of the day, but the in classroom portions were negatively effecting him, so we sought a new school. In less then a month, we saw a marked confidence change, better behavior and great reports from his new school. The new school was shocked at how behind they had held him. Overall, if your child is comfortable in the middle of learning, needs no extra help, doesn't place TAG, or have any extra needs, you might find this school to be OK. But if your child needs any extra help, they will not find it at this school.

Meh, The principal and vice principal did nothing to help the school and I often felt targeted by my teacher. There were some good ones but MEH MEH MEH MEH MEH MEH. This school develops a different way of thinking. It can be useful but I'm not sure it can really justify the sacrifice of no academic knowledge.

I went here for nine years and the first 4 were great we had community and we helped the environment but the rest sucked there were bullies the teachers were nice but not helpful and it didnΓÇÖt set me up for high school when I was little I liked art until ses because mia the art teacher was so mean and told people there work was bad and that she was going to fail them she was very biest and once I asked to get water she said no and then 5 seconds later she let someone else get water i donΓÇÖt recommend people going to this school

My child attended for 4 years. While the teachers were "nice", the school is an exceptionally chaotic environment, with administration that is largely absent. Unfortunately, parents do not demand excellence for their children at this school, and are happy with the feel-good aspects of "environmental" education. Ask yourself this, though... How are Johnny and Jane going to save the planet when they can't do math?

I went to SES for my 7&8 grade years. I've moved alot and this was my 6th school I've been to, the students and staff are extremely nice, but among the students everyone had their own click. Most of the kids had money, I was not one of those kids so at sometimes it was hard. The teaching was not the best experience I had there my first year all the 7th grade math teachers weren't the best, alot of kids didn't understand it. Now in high school I hear teachers say "you learned this in middle school" for some of this is true, some of it so to much. Sunnyside maybe a school for some, if your willing to do speeches in front of the whole school, and if your family has money (if you dont free/reduced lunch is a life saver) and prepare yourself for alot of volunteering. If your in the middle if your elementary or middle school years I would not recommend it. Overall I did have a great time, I got a understand of the world and got to express what I believe in (and made some amazing friends along the way.) I would give this school a try first, never judge a book by its cover.
