Sunnyside Environmental School Ratings & Reviews

Throughout middle school I remember dying to leave that school. The climate of that school is extremely political and intoxicating. The admin encourages students to walk out, protest, and hold very biased political views. The curriculum is centered around social politics and race. I’m sad to say that environmentalism and proper education has fallen from the teaching objective. In this school I have learned about how genders are limitless, “toxic whiteness”, and how all conservatives are bigots and do not deserve to be heard. This school put me through confusion and depression. I went in hiding for fear of being judged when speaking about my beliefs. I do not recommend this school to anyone, as it has only brought me pain.

Lack of basic academics. I knew far too many students that needed external supplemental tutoring to meet the minimum standard for achievement at their grade level.

My son went to this school in two grade years, I had very high hopes, when we first started, the VP seemed eager to help and everyone seemed very kind, but once my son started, we started to see issues. There is a lot of talk about "the individual" and working together, but we never saw any of this in practice. They had no interest, it seemed from our dealings and talking to others, in individual learning, they preferred children, that happily aimed at the middle of the materials they were teaching. If your child needed more help or was learning above what they were offering in the class, they didn't seem to care, have an interest or have the materials, to do extended teaching, and just left those not in the middle to do nothing. We saw the Music, Art, PE and Cafeteria staff all go out of their ways to work with kids, and some of the staff in these areas, really were seeming to abide the schools ethos so well. These staff members seemed eager to actually help students and to address the mixed needs of the school, and offered brilliant care and learning opportunities. The teachers in the lower grades how ever, were not very effective. A parent who is a teacher, on one of the field trips we chaperoned, was very disappointed, as she found the safety directions offered to the children to be confusing, and not consistently used. In fact we discovered at least one of the teachers, regularly had this issue with the children, in not using clear directions, that lead to confusion in the children in other areas. This made us wonder just how effective she was in teaching in a classroom. We decided to remove our child from Sunnyside, as we noticed, his behavior, learning and interest in learning were all suffering from being at Sunnyside. He met some nice children and enjoyed the outside the main classroom portions of the day, but the in classroom portions were negatively effecting him, so we sought a new school. In less then a month, we saw a marked confidence change, better behavior and great reports from his new school. The new school was shocked at how behind they had held him. Overall, if your child is comfortable in the middle of learning, needs no extra help, doesn't place TAG, or have any extra needs, you might find this school to be OK. But if your child needs any extra help, they will not find it at this school.

Meh, The principal and vice principal did nothing to help the school and I often felt targeted by my teacher. There were some good ones but MEH MEH MEH MEH MEH MEH. This school develops a different way of thinking. It can be useful but I'm not sure it can really justify the sacrifice of no academic knowledge.

I went here for nine years and the first 4 were great we had community and we helped the environment but the rest sucked there were bullies the teachers were nice but not helpful and it didn’t set me up for high school when I was little I liked art until ses because mia the art teacher was so mean and told people there work was bad and that she was going to fail them she was very biest and once I asked to get water she said no and then 5 seconds later she let someone else get water i don’t recommend people going to this school
