This is a great school and while students and staff cannot foresee and or control issues regarding other people and their choices, they can, have and continue to push for greatness; it's a school of promise and inspiration.

Kelly is a school with many voices and diversity. At first this is overwhelming but for our family it has been a refreshing chance to expose our children to a global environment. The teachers, councilors, and administrative staff are fully aware of the diversity and do a great job a supporting and helping kids to explore the richness this provides the school.

The reasons Kelly is a great school are many. Primarily, there are multiple disciplines used at Kelly to instruct students. Inquiry based learning, Constructivism, Direct Instruction, Cooperative are among them. Rather than focusing on one style of instruction, there are many used to reach a broad range of learning abilities. The diversity in this school is beautiful with 26% being native english caucasian students. 20% Latino with only 50% of those families preferring Spanish in the home. 9% Asian 9% African American and many of those students identifying as having multi racial families. 33% of our population are Native Russian Language Speaking with all of these students participating in the Russian Immersion program. The "No Homework" Policy is something specific to Kindergarten and First Grade. This is something that is determined by each teacher. My first grader had homework in Kindergarten and First grade however, it's important to recognize that it's game and play focused to encourage play. These teachers recognize the importance of play in daily life for child development and that PLAY is at the core of learning for children in these age groups. The older the student, the more homework given. So the "No Homework Policy" is a misnomer... Also, the recommended amount of time spent on homework each night for this age is 10 minutes. And the school heavily encourages family reading for 20 minutes a night together - which brings your child to DOUBLE the recommended homework content without "worksheets". I would argue the resistance to "No Homework" is a lack of willingness to think outside the box by some parents. Also incredible? The PTA. The PTA does a massive amount of grant writing to grow our outdoor learning plan including a native plant learning garden, hosts movie nights for students that have an educational component attached, provides free popcorn and brings Multnomah County Library to augment the Movie night with relevant reading materials. This is a great school. Test scores are over emphasised when you have a DLI program.

No homework policy is ridiculous , how are these kids suppose to prepare themselves with the overload of homework one gets in college if they don't start now! This school is full of kids whose parents don't give a damn how they behave or do in school therefore resolving a conflict between 2 students can't be accomplished because the corrupt parent will defend their child's bully behavior no matter what. I had to teach my child how to fight back in order to make it through the school year.

My kids currently go to school at Kelly. I have read some of the reviews. I have seen a few different schools and I feel this is a really great school. If we ever have issue's with our children it is taken care of right away. The principle has always been very helpful. The teachers are awesome and push our children to do better. I feel my kids get a wonderful education.
