Portland Waldorf School Ratings & Reviews

Our children are getting a great education without screens and simple memorization. Instead they are being taught to think and learn on their own. Great teachers and great community. And the focus on nature and outdoor learning is a huge plus. It's what school should be.

This school is wonderful. My kids are getting a fabulous education, broad and deep. The teachers are dedicated and love kids and teaching. The community is warm and welcoming. The students continually impress me with their work. I could go on, but you get the idea.

My daughter is blooming at Portland Waldorf. Her teacher is extraordinary. Her classmates are exceptional: kind, curious and gentle. I have had great experience with the faculty and other teachers. This is a school full of kindness, a place where children flourish. Waldorf isn't for every family. You kind of have to buy into stuff like keeping your kids away from media -- and embracing routine, nature and structured learning. If you want to develop the whole child, I'd strongly suggest taking a walk through the grades. You see the power of the pedagogy through the kids. They're healthy, balanced and confident. Good kids. Super good kids. So Waldorf is a bit removed from typical 2017. You don't see kids on their cell phones. You see older kids playing with younger kids on the big, open playground. It feels...unplugged. A place where kids can be kids, not media consumers, not tablet junkies. There's lots of good literature on why this is great for kids' development. And you certainly see it at PWS. In the hallways and in our home, I've seen the power of PWS. It's a great school. I can't recommend it too highly. Five effervescent stars -- amidst a shower of beeswax and yarn.

This school is completely awful! They don't prepare you for anything except becoming a grandmother.I have dyslexia and they had absolutely no want to help me in that and they ended up expelling me because my family wanted some accommodations like being able to write in pencil instead of calligraphy pen. it just sucks,

Rigorous, creative, conscientious, community -- these are the first words that come to mind about my son's education. He has attended PWS from 3rd to 8th grade, and will continue into the high school next year. Despite the fact that homework isn't introduced until around 4th grade (which allowed him to develop a greater love for life and school), as an 8th grader he now completes lab write ups, historical essays, German and Spanish dialogues, Algebra I homework and violin practice independently and with top grades while balancing after school athletics. The intelligence, creativity and warmth of his teachers, and the rigorous and meaningful curriculum, have shaped him into a young man who is curious about the world, who works diligently, is caring of his peers and respectful of adults. The PWS high school students who I interact with are also bright, dynamic and thoughtful, and they go on to top universities with substancial scholarships. In talking with alumni, I've been impressed not only with their success in college and career, but with their obvious self-knowledge and ability to navigate the big questions of adult life with such confidence and grace. In addition to all the benefits that my child receives, joining PWS has given me a community that shares my lifestyle values: eco-consicousness, reducuction of brainless media and consumerism, and celebration of beauty, creativity and community.
