i agree w homeschoolparent's post of 1/29/12. NUHS is a wonderful place for any young person needing or desiring a uniquely individual educational experience. your student excels academically? NUHS offers a 3yr program. your student needs extra support? Counselors connect closely with students to encourage maximum growth. your student made poor choices & now has much to make up? many students come seeking to overcome mistakes of the past, & earning lost credits. NUHS offers a 5 year plan for students unable to finish on time w/ all support and structure needed to achieve a full graduation, ready & confident to move forward in life. my son is currently a sophomore at New Urban. i have had some time to observe and interact with the environment here, and i have one more Very Important thing to add- in the past 2 years, i have encountered ZERO bullying in this school. many of the kids have experienced terrible social difficulties at previous schools and have come to New Urban precisely because it is a "Safe Space". there is no bullying here because the students themselves have rejected it, and have chosen to embrace the school's motto instead, " Together, We Can Overcome"

My son came to NUHS from home schooling. (not a troubled kid) New Urban was our choice based on the interrelated curriculum, small size and family atmosphere. The overwhelming majority of students I have had the pleasure to meet at New Urban are bright talented and articulate. I could not ask for a more engaged and caring staff and have recommend the New Urban program to many parents. I feel a great frustration at the looser bad kid label it has been unjustly given. I would encourage any prospective family to take a tour of the school, meet the staff, and students and see for themselves what a great place New Urban is.

It's set up structurally for a student to earn credits quicker and still be able to graduate, but, if you're worried about your child being introduced to more troubled kids than they already have on their own, this probably isn't the place to send them. Also, they have a no smoking policy, which is great, but the punishment doesn't quite fit the crime. My child was suspended for the rest of the day (a Thursday) and the next day (a Friday) therefore giving her a 3 1/2 day weekend. She felt rewarded. Whatever happened to Saturday school?
