Hope Chinese Charter School Ratings & Reviews

We have watched the school grow over the last five years. It provides a rigorous, excellent, bilingual education both at the elementary school level and so far, at the middle school level. It's not going to be a fit for every child so parents should understand the expectations when they commit to enrolling their child. School also expects lots of volunteering and parent involvement/fundraising (as with any charter school). Small community and class sizes are rare these days in a public school. Our kids feel welcomed, respected and have made lifelong friends. We love this school!

I feel very strongly about immersion and my children becoming fluent in a second language, without this conviction I would have pulled my children out of the school years ago. It's not all bad, but over the years the bad has definitely started to outweigh the good.

I am a former educator at Hope. Based on the families, community, and quality of education, I would rate this school as great. I would recommend this school for anyone looking into a bilingual Mandarin program. The community is caring, involved and supportive. I think the students' great test scores are indicative of this. Regarding one person commenting about the high staff turn over, I will remark that it is likely to remain that way indefinitely. Hope usually hires only part time, with the assurance of full time being offered as grades open up. Yet, each year, instead of having teachers teach 2 classes or grade levels resulting in full time work, part time teachers are hired for each new grade added. In addition to this, staff meetings and trainings are extreme- especially when considering you are a part timer AND you are not getting compensated for the meetings/trainings outside of your contracted time.In addition, English curricula is pieced together or incomplete. As an educator, I am happy and even enjoy the flexibility to plan lessons, but administrator criticism was extremely high regarding every aspect of my practice and very demoralizing. I promise I am not the only teacher that felt that way. My families greatly supported me and made me feel SO loved when I resigned. I love them and still think of them fondly.Regarding homework- it is required by the school to give a certain amount of homework, but the Chinese teachers (whom I love like crazy) feel really strongly about students needing extra practice at home to learn Mandarin. I wish everyone the best at Hope.

All school have positives and negatives and this school is no exception. On the positive side, my daughter loves her teachers and they do a good job at teaching children to work together and be kind to each other. It is a small community and it is nice that parents and kids watch out for each other. My daughter is doing well in English, reading above grade level, even though much time is dedicated for Chinese. For the negative side, there is an excessive amount of homework, up to an hour a night in additional to extra classroom time daily. As a parent, you are constantly being asked for money several times per year. I chose this school because it was public, but they try and tell you how much money you are saving because you are not at private school. That is true, but it isn't a private school and some of us could never afford private school, which is why we chose this school. There are limited after school activities and the ones that are offered are often expensive as the school uses these activities as extra fundraising dollars. There has been quite a bit of staff turn over in the short time it has been open. Also, parents are asked to do 40 hours of volunteer hours per school year, which is very difficult for working families. I just wanted parents to have all of the info to decide if this school is right for your whole family because it is a family commitment.

As a parent and a founder of this school, I've seen it grow and thrive over the last 4 years. I'm very grateful for the teachers, staff, families and other supporters for committing to HCCS's success. It's a joy to see the students speaking Mandarin and learning to be good community members, growing into responsible global citizens.
