Nelsonville-York Elementary School Ratings & Reviews
I think Nelsonville York is a great school system, I think kids are tought very well and go on to do great things in the world. I am a graduate of NY as well as my husband, we are also both college grads. Our son is in 5th grade has been on Merit Honor Roll every year and is also in the tag program. We did move away for a bit, but returned finding that NY was more advanced than the other school he was attending. As for the football stadium being built that money was in most part donated by a local business and you cannot tell people what to do with their personal money. And we may be a smaller district so that does limit the extras we have, you cant have everything if you dont have they numbers to support it. And we may not have all the money in the worl either but thats an issue that our State Gov needs to deal with! I am very happy with our school. I love that the teachers know the kids they know the parents and they are always there whne you need them..
I agree with the previous parents that the emphasis is clearly on sports. Although sports are an important part of school, being a student should always come first. The district has made some headway in curriculum in the last several years but still lags behing many school districts. The tag program was just started a couple of years ago and last year was our first year involved in model UN. The elementary is a complete mess whereas the middle and high school are much more professional and focused. Some of our children have difficulty when taking standardized testing (i.e. SAT/ACT etc.) even though they are in the top of their class. This would reflect some problems with curriculum. And as far as the new buildings--notice which came first--the football field and weight room. I think this speaks for itself.
I agree - too much emphasis on sports. Very disappointed all around. When I enrolled my children in both elem. and high school - my oldest wanted to take French - it isn't offered -not enough kids signed up, but they had/have a swimteam of ONE! This districts priorities are not in the right place. Had I known what I know now, we never would have moved to this district.
