Granville Public Elementary Schools offers a decent school system managed by an astonishingly dis-engaged and uninspired principal and leadership team. The district needs to break out of the small-town mindset and evolve into the [mid]-21st century or students will be left behind and parents from Columbus and surrounding areas will seek alternatives instead of relying on the school's now outdated and inaccurate reputation as being top-notch. As just a few examples, the school's progress is tempered by an ineffectual and dis-involved principal, too much focus on arbitrary standardized testing, a laughably insecure and poorly managed student drop-off/pickup process, no movement to embrace new teaching philosophies and school policies (from blended learning to digital citizenship), an utter lack of diversity, and an inexplicable reluctance to take advantage of every possible opportunity to provide the best possible learning experience for students. We moved to Granville because we had high expectations for the school system, and even at the early elementary level we have been very disappointed. This may have historically been one of the best school districts in the state, but it is very quickly being left behind. If you've ever seriously considered moving to Granville "for the great schools," think again. There is nothing progressive or inspired to find here. 3 stars is more than fair.

Granville public schools compare to private college preparatory academies. Two of my children had attended an exclusive private college prep school and we prefer Granville. The students are taught to excel. Classes offer separate subject instruction for different levels of learners. I have two children that excel academically and one that has some learning issues. All my children were given the instruction and help that they needed. The parent community is very active and supportive of the schools which helps the teachers allowing them to concentrate on the students. The Granville community supports one single school system consisting of an elementary (kindergarten through 3rd), an intermediate (4th through 6th), a middle (7th and 8th) and the High School. Granville is also a wonderful community that hosts a four day Fourth of July celebration, Blues Festival, farmer's market, and other festivals. It is surprising economical considering the education and the quality of living.

The Granville school system provides a full well thought out curriculum that concentrates on the individual learner. The classes are rigorous, especially in the higher grades, similar to a private school. Granville has been recognized nationally with Presidential Blue Ribbon awards for excellence. There are programs for all learners including the Discovery program for students who excel. Several years ago Granville schools was highlighted as one of the best public schools in the nation which brought an influx of new residents to this small beautiful college town. As a result, Granville likes to do all it can to keep word of these great schools quiet. Not only are the schools excellent but Granville is a true community where everyone supports the school and the town. If you go into the local grocery store or to the shops along main street you can see that people are talking to each other as they come and go because you get to know "everyone". It is a beautiful place to live.

I graduated from Granville decades before standardized testing and 'no child left behind' has forced public schools to "teach testing". Granville was at the top of ladder then too. I consider myself fortunate to have benefited from that commitment to excellence. I now reluctantly live in an area that private school is the only choice for a decent education. Be grateful for what you are providing for your children!

I totally agree with the person who said they are obsessed with standardized tests. Sometimes the kids take practice tests during lunch. Before the kids take the OAT, the principal will come to the classroom and tell the children to eat a good breakfast and not to stress. All this test taking is taking away the joy and fun of Elementary school. All children should enjoy school at this age. But at GES I don't think very many kids are truly happy. Although the test scores are amazing. Please keep in mind how hard the children work and all the give up in order to get these scores.
