This school used to be absolutely amazing. There was a waiting list just to get into the school because they literally hit the building's maximum capacity. It's gone progressively downhill over the past several years. The leadership is all about getting more students through recognition and awards, meanwhile, they're neglecting the current problems that are causing students to leave. This school is better than the local public schools, so it's a great deal if you get the full ride through Lorain Schools. It's not worth the $8000 tuition for everybody else. It has all the same problems as other public schools, in addition to an administration that isn't fixing the problems, but Open Door is better at covering it up. I mean, you have to get more students and money somehow.

I am currently a junior at Open Door this year and this school has shaped me into what I am today. I have been given so many opportunities to develop my skills and talents and become a well rounded student. I am involved in many extracurricular activities and the size of the school helps me participate in as many things as I can. Soccer, cheer leading, musicals, student council, band, choir, and hand bells are some of the many activities I have learned to love here. Secondly, the loving community of the school as a whole has helped me in my spiritual and academic path. The teachers truly care about me and my success, and will bend over backwards to make sure I understand and excel in every topic covered. I have made life long relationships and the overall atmosphere that there will always be someone at school to ask me how I am doing is so important to me. Each and every day there is someone who cares to answer my questions and work with me so I can reach my fullest potential. As I a student I couldn't be more grateful for the journey this school has provided me with and I hope that many more students will enjoy the benefits of this school in the years to come.

I love this school! It has been such a blessing to my family and my children are well educated are are well-prepared for college and life. There are many extra-curricular activities to try. The staff and teachers are absolutely the best part. One of our students struggled with academics for a time and I was amazed with how well the staff responded to help him. Is more then succeeding now.

The school is trying to grow entirely too fast. They are all about are the numbers and the money and status. They say they are disciplining to others. And if you believe that ... Great, but at what expense? They are not equipped to handle the influx of students. They have ran this entire school year with vacant vital positions (no high school principal and the dean of students, who handles discipline, is very rarely there). They have major discipline issues that they do not know how to handle. They are boasting about the large numbers of growth. I suggest you look beyond that and see where this growth is coming from and has ODCS grown their staff to handle it? (They have a lot of growth from Choice-Ed and not those that are paying in full.) They did create a new position but it has sat mostly vacant. Their head of schools says he is doing two jobs (head of schools and high school principal), but he is not doing them well because discipline is out of control. And then there is the ever-changing curriculum. They cannot seem to make up their mind what they want to teach. The one good thing I will say is that they are focused on the Bible and our Lord and Savior. That is a huge thing indeed! However, children need a full education, and for those that do pay and are not receiving any financial assistance, we are no longer getting our money's worth. There are not enough teachers. The new teachers are not quality teachers. The teachers that have been there for a while seem to really have a passion for teaching and a love of God but they seem to be at a loss as to what to do with these high number of students in their classroom, especially the ones that are not disciplined and do not come from Christian homes. Also, I read this review on here and I agree with it 100%: "I've gone here all my life so I know how things are run. Most of the teachers are just okay, but some are really awful. There are people there who kiss up to the school and get whatever they want, like a picture of their child on the website. God does remain center, but the weekly chapel is sub par. The building is really starting to deteriorate and a large number of staff is related to each other, like being married to each other. Rules are lax and only certain people get punished for things. The system seems disorganized and highly inconsistent. There are better alternatives for education."

I had home-schooled our kids for 3 years, but after adopting 2 year old twins, I just didn't have anything left to give. Our kids needed more, and quite frankly, I needed a break! What a joy it has been to watch each of our children thrive at ODCS, not just educationally, but in personal and spiritual maturity! I am beyond grateful for the staff at ODCS. The one on one attention my children receive in incredible and the investment the staff makes in the lives of the students is a gift! I thank the Lord for bringing our family to ODCS because I know without a doubt this is where my children are becoming more like Jesus.
