John Hay Early College High School Ratings & Reviews

The school is just OK for my daughter. I think the academics are good except that the teachers tend to give a lot of busy work(for homework) and that there is way too much of a focus on the standardized tests. But students can take classes at community college so that's good! My daughter plans on doing that her junior year. Teachers are either really nice and really good teachers... i have heard from my daughter and her friends that 2of the teachers have said really racist remarks in the past couple of months but aside from that most are ok. the only problem i have with the school in general is that sometimes my daughter have to go to school(it takes her almost 2 hours to get to school with three different bus transfers) when it is extremely extremely cold...some parents can't afford nice winter clothes. also sometimes in the past the school has waited too long to cancel the school.. and so in the past my daughter has shown up to school only to learn that she left(for school) 30 minutes before the "school is canceled!" phone call has came

i think this school is kinda overrated... like the teachers and the principal have a really big insecurity problem that they try to fill by trying to make sure their test scores are higher than all the other schools. also there's a teacher on staff that is really sexist and that has made innapropriate comments to my daughter...but then denied them when I went up to the school to sort things out... the way the school handles things like that makes me give it a 2. HOWEVER... this school let my daughter take classes at tri-c and that is priceless so it's not all bad There aren't really that many academic based extracurriculars for EC students tho

John Hay or any school for that matter, is what you make of it. If you don't want to learn than don't waste anyone's time. Some schools are a lot better than others. It's also a parents job to find out which ones are best. If you have the grades, then enter a program that helps you take college classes while still in high school. And one more thing, proofread what you wrote before you submit!

I'm a Senior at Early College right now. For the most part, the school is okay, definitely better than many of the other neighboring high schools. However, it does have a lot of downfalls in the curriculum. First, it's a three year high school. So it takes Cleveland kids(most who are preforming behind the curve), shoves knowledge down their throats just enough so that they can remember it to take a test, and then throws them out in three years(when most of them are not truly ready to be on their own). Yes, we have a 100% graduation rate... but about 50% of the kids who start as Freshman either get kicked out, or transfer back to their home schools. And there's not a lot of "college prep" going on. If the school wanted to be truly "college prep," I'd think that they'd try to mirror the way that college classes are set up, not just in rigor, but in format. Give the kids a syllabus, with weekly assignments, a few short papers, and a longer one(and then actually give constructive criticism on the papers so that students can improve). I've been here for three years and I haven't had to write a paper longer than 5 pages that wasn't just "A graded for completion". CSSM is a betterchoice.

My school is great. The teachers are wonderful. There are actually getting you ready for college and, PSAT OR ACT. The work is hard but, if you work hard and, do what you suppose to do it will be find. There are no ignorant students there also. Everybody there is friendly.
