The community is excellent, kids, parents, after school time at the field. The school I think just expanded too quickly. Class sizes are too large. Although there are a few gems of teachers, it is not consistent throughout, and who can blame the teachers if they have 30 kids in a classroom? I had two sons there, and I am very engaged in their schooling. The kindergartner had an incredible teacher, which is why I gave this school 2 stars instead of 1. The 3rd grader not so much, and they inappropriately tried to move him into special education services to compensate for their large class size (see comment above). Thank God I have a doctorate and additional graduate work from 3 Ivy league institutions that I had the resources and understanding of the system to not be misguided. We love the community, but both boys will be going to private school next year (with much smaller class sizes).

The school is wonderful, and I am deeply grateful to its teachers and administration. My son started here in Pre-K and is now in middle-school. He's had a great education, but, even more importantly, he also has enjoyed a very sociable and friendly community, which PSIS 78 is a central part of, and this has my son a person who truly enjoys the company of others. The teachers are caring and involved, the facilities are brand new, and the community of Hunters Point/Queens West is like a little town (hard to believe) in the middle of HUGE and anonymous NYC! In my opinion, the best thing about this zoned school is that a child grows in a small community, going to school and playing in the wonderful neighborhood playgrounds with other children living adjacently to him or her. It's a real, small community here, not just a location, and PSIS 78 is a critical and wonderful part of it. It's hard to believe we are in NYC.

Now going into the 4th grade, I can say with confidence that we have had a terrific experience with 78. Great teachers and staff. As long as you speak up, your needs will be met. Naturally not everyone will have the same experience but i'm thrilled at the level of involvement of the parents, staff and the facility. Some of the complaints I've read are teacher specific and if discussed with the staff, are always addressed. Yes the community is growing faster then the schools...78 has been working hard to address this but remember its not their fault. The PTA is amazing raising funds for recess and various enrichment programs. The sports field right outside the school is a fantastic and rare NYC school amenity.

this school SUCKS ! if i could give it 0 stars , i would . my child's kindergarten teacher has very little patience and VERY LITTLE TEACHING EXPERIENCE ! (has been teaching for 2 or 3 years) -- and it shows ! she is rude and condescending whenever i've tried to speak to her about certain issues within the class.my child has special needs and her teacher REMOVED HER MEDICAL BRACELET and forgot to put it back on . it was left on her desk from friday to monday . when asked about it , she told me that she didnt know it was a medical bracelet . INSANE !!!the classes have too many point systems and rewards . not everyone gets rewards and it discourages the children . not every child is treated equally . the office staff are very rude . when i first registered my child for the school , the SECRETARY made me get a notarized letter stating that i lived in the area ( even though i had utility bills to prove it) . the principle is NEVER AROUND ; anytime i have had an issue , i've been redirected to the AP (assistant principal) . naturally , she defends the teachers/staff , but should be unbiased . however , the security guard is the sweetest and she looks out for my child constantly. All in all , i am very dissapointed at this school , i thought that it would be wonderful because i live on center blvd (3 blocks away) but it has made me consider transferring my child to a diff school .

Very academic in my view, program is directed towards the test scores, whith less interest in the individual child and it's needs (little recess time). Old fashioned system, communication with the parents is lacking, but hard working teachers and staff and improving as more parents are getting involved.
