Urban Academy Laboratory High School Ratings & Reviews

June 22, 2017 Submitted by a parent
My daughter is about to graduate from Urban after three great years. She was accepted to all the colleges she applied to and has chosen to go to one that gave her a full scholarship. She consistently had meaningful coursework which demanded thoughtful engagement of texts, lots of writing and revision, and challenging math and science work. In addition she has had phenomenal opportunities in the arts - for example a playwriting class where they went to at least five plays and had their original script read dramatically by professional actors. Urban is a place where an academically capable student can find lots of teachers who will build mentoring relationships with them, pushing them to do outstanding work. The graduation process, which requires students to demonstrate proficiency by completing meaningful individualized projects in six areas of study in lieu of Regents exams, is demanding and complex, and my daughter feels rightfully proud of the work she put in to her proficiency projects. I can not reccomend Urban highly enough for intellectually engaged students who are looking for a place to soar.

Urban Academy is a breath of fresh air in the NYC public high school line up of schools. At Urban Academy, everyone knows your child, and the administration & teachers provide a supportive environment where the students are challenged to reach their full potential. Some course offerings are limited, there is no foreign language, but there is the opportunity to take college classes. Overall I'm so pleased to have gotten my child out of one of the specialized high schools where the environment was very stressful, and all they did was take tests, with no understanding that students may have learning differences... into Urban Academy where the student and learning are nurtured.
