Very postiive vibes from the day you walk in. THe staff goes beyond to meet my child's needs in all areas. Adminstration is supportive and communiates in a personal way with me as a parent. When there is an issue, I do recieve feedback in a timely manner. As an educator myself, I do see that the quailty is there and the supportive enviorment for students with disabilities is there. THe principal and assistant prinipal know the students and students feel comfortable speaking to them because they know how to meet them where they are! I would definitely recommend this school to others, and I have.

As a past employee, I cannot believe I wasted my time working there. Senior faculty who currently work there are only there for these reasons...because they are tenured (can't get fired) and have become comfortable, which is really lazy. There are some (very few) currently employed teachers who deserve great pay and deserve a career outside of that place because they truly are remarkable. However, the other teachers have no idea what teaching at a real school is like. And the "raise freeze" that the school swears is across the board at every school...don't believe it. The business office personnel rants about "spending money" for the school, but they have no idea what a school really spends on their students. They sure do drive home in beautiful cars...guess there's never a raise freeze for them. The only positive about this school is that the students can feel safe from apart from their home/neighborhood environment. Educationally, it's a disservice. And it is a disservice when students are "allowed" to return to school after striking or causing harm to another student or a teacher (this would be the not so safe aspect despite the safety provided apart from their home environment). "Allow" meaning that because students have disabilities, we must understand that they don't know right from wrong. Yeah, sure. The school wants to make sure they get their $30,000 a head, so they can't possibly get rid of a student. To all the previous negative comments mentioned on great schools about Hallen....they are all true! This school is just another example of knowing how to fiddle with the books and getting their paperwork in order in time for auditing. It is all about politics....the business end, and about teachers who kiss up to administration to benefit in any way they can. It's all about being "in".....knowing before everyone else does. So please, find another school for your child and apply to another job to work at...not this one.

Physical Education Classes are stuffed beyond what is allowed by the state regulations regarding student:teacher ratios. This problem makes it difficult for the teachers to individualize their program and fosters an environment of potential injuries.

To any teachers thinking about applying to Hallen, or to any parents who are thinking about sending your kids here....DON'T! It is a horrible, toxic environment to work in. The administration is awful. All the director is concerned with is budget cuts. She doesn't care about the students or the staff. I was a model employee. To my face the director told me I was doing a wonderful job, encouraged me to get my certification and talked about promoting me, then out of nowhere I was fired. No notice, not even the courtesy of letting me know to my face. She had used me the whole year, even violated my union contract. I was hired as a one to one, but she had me working with two children, violating both of their IEPs and ignoring what was in the students' best interests, meanwhile pocketing the money she saved by only hiring one para for two students. She talks down to all of the students and staff, belittling everyone. She also gossips about students and staff, sharing confidential information. She puts student's pictures up on the website without having them sign consent forms. She has cut every valuable program, Hallen doesn't even have a library. Good luck teaching the kids to read!

The library in the bronx gave me a BETTER education then this place, I wish the Internet was around back then, I would have been smarter. Hallen taught me to read, that's it! The rest I had to do on my own. I dropped out of Hallen, by that point I was happy to go to my local I.S school in the Bronx. I guess some things haven't changed since reading these reviews.
