Farragut Middle School Ratings & Reviews

It's an amazing school where children are involved in all kind of activities, sports, orchestra, chorus, band. LA teacher is the best and I wish they were more teachers like her. We come from Europe and we can see a huge difference how Math is taught here. The level is so low , but it's not the school fault it's the system! They are doing in 6th grade what normally you do in 4th grade in Europe. School is very good, the standards are high and I would recommend it.

Why has nobody addressed the fact that Hastings residents got a letter in the mail during the summer of 2012 telling us that the Farragut Middle School was on New York State watch list for underachievement and designated a 'FOCUS' school in need of improvement? Worse, the principal is about to retire and the same people who appointed the mess that is down in the elementary school will be probably doing the hiring for the new Middle School principal?

There is no parental involvement besides the usual: fundraising & one parent/teacher conference which the school limits to meeting with only three teachers (not all five core subjects). Teachers are very uneven: 7th grade tenured Math teacher & still young so he'll be there for yrs. to come, doesn't review homework with the kids, calling reviewing a "bother" & he prefers to just walk the aisles seeing that numbers were put on paper, but not checking content or comprehension. There is no FUN here. NO joy. The principal does not handle verbal & physical altercations well. No consequences for bullying. Lots of children, with two parents at home, dual incomes are neglected, so lots of acting out/disturbing class time. Food stinks. Playground stinks. One year our kid had a Spanish substitute cause the real teacher quit in October (better job). She couldn't speak or understand a word of Spanish. Principal is lazy. Doesn't hire long term subs when she is given advanced warning (like an on-going health issue). Grades 5-8 spent much of the year watching many movies: Three Stooges, The Hunger Games, Ferris etc. when chorus teacher was out. No movies about music and until complaints, no sub!

Having attended the school, I can honestly say there's a mixed bag of teachers, with some that perform very well and inspire their students, and some that are collectively disliked by both the students and parents, and should have gotten fired before being put on tenure. I feel as though the principal does a bad job helping the kids through a tough time in their lives, and the health teacher does very little to try and keep the children from indulging in the stonerhood that our highschool has become. I feel as though the eighth graders are also not given enough privileges, and babied by the school. While the test scores are good, as is most of educating done, I think the school fails in putting the children on a good track. But attests its better than sending your children to one of those dicky private schools. The kids need to learn the ropes. I'd recommend FMS, because of the teachers like Joe Vaccaro and Christopher Keogh

Shocking but true our child was embarrassed by the 7th grade L.A. Teacher by announcing that some students scored a perfect score on their work and others did not. He proceedd to call the students that did not fare well to his desk, while the class was in session, to review the errors. Meanwhile the remainder of the class could hear his comments. Hard working students deserve better teachers!
