Ss Cyril & Methodius School Ratings & Reviews
My kids have been at SSCM for seven years now. My husband and I have been very happy with the school's programs and curriculum. When NY partially adopted Common Core, SSCM's administration very wisely sent their teachers for added training on teaching the Core and perhaps even more wisely, scheduled a series of meetings with the parents, so that we could also learn more about the goals of the Common Core, get a feel for how SSCM intended to roll out elements of the Common Core and understand how our children's learning would be transforming over the coming years. The education my children have received from SSCM has been outstanding. Progressive learning from experienced teachers with access to the best technology. It's been worth every penny alone just for this piece. But moreover, the school has a beautiful sense of community. The fact that SSCM is enriching our children on a spiritual, emotional and academic level brings us great comfort. We love that the teachers not only teach, but also embody values such as social responsibility, community service and kindness to others and to the planet we share. Our kids love having options like violin, chess club, Shakespeare Festival, volleyball, cross country team, band, rosary, knitting, art shows, NYSSMA and more. I would highly recommend the school to anyone who asks and look forward to the rest of my children's time with SSCM.
Excellent programs enrich my child's academic life at SSCM, from Mock Trial to Shakespeare performances, the Violin program, Spelling and Geography Bees, and he loves that they've now gotten iPads which are integrated into their regular learning. All around, it's been a good experience, the teachers are approachable and we think there's a good amount of discipline in the school.
This will be our children's third year at SSCM and we have been very pleased with the level of education, the programs available for high achievers, and most of all, the sense of community that is evident in the student body and families alike. We respect the teachers they've had, the learning is progressive and the school administration seems to value the same elements of learning that my husband and I feel are important: problem-solving skills, good moral judgment, and thinking beyond the questions on the page. We also like the level of discipline the principal exercises within the school. Treatment of the students is fair and consistent and the rules are simple and important ones. At the same time, there is an element of FUN and learning in every extracurricular activity the school initiates. While some look for activities like baseball and soccer, those are things you can sign up for with any intramural program. We much prefer the types of activities SSCM chooses to support: such as Curriculum Faires, Violin Concerts, Drama Club, Mock Trial, Yoga, Book & Cook, Band, Food Drives and more. Keep doing what you're doing, SSCM!
I have two (2) children. My son attended SSCM from Kindergarten through 8th grade. He graduated in June, 2010 and is currently a Sophomore at St. John the Baptist HS. He is an Honor student and taking a few AP courses as well. My daughter is currently in 5th grade at SSCM and also began in Kindergarten. She is a bright, energetic student and has been given many opportunities to expand her education in recent years. The school includes many programs formulated for both the advanced student as well as the creative student. I am grateful every day for choosing this school. True, there is tuition to be paid, but my husband and I find it a sacrifice worth making. The kids are happy, intelligent, articulate and aware of the people and community around them. I can't ask for better than that in this lifetime and I truly believe that they now have the strong foundation they will need in the world of today.
My three children all attended SSCM for a time, I transfered my older two into SSCM after spending years in public elementary schools, and my youngest has been there since Pre-K. There is such a difference between public elementary and Private, Catholic school. My daughter, who was so tiny, was being bullied in public school. They do not stand for that type of treatment at SSCM. My daughter is about to graduate from Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, and will be off to College in the Fall. My oldest son is currently attending Chaminade High School, in Mineola, and is a sophomore. SSCM prepared them both well for the rigorous standards at these Catholic High Schools. My youngest is now in 6th grade, and has known his teachers bascially all his life. He is involved in the music program, and was selected for Senior Honor Band this year. This school is family centered, and the Parish is wonderful as well.
