Medgar Evers College Preparatory School Ratings & Reviews

I have attended Medgar since sixth grade and I am currently a tenth grader. In middle school, I was given the opportunity to take classes that high schoolers normally take. For example, In the sixth grade, I was given the opportunity to study world history. In the seventh grade, I continued my study of global history and at the end of the school year I took my regents exam. In addition to this, I was given the opportunity to take Regents Living Environment and my Algebra 1 regents. In the eight grade, I was able to take my physics regents, US History Regents, English regents and Algebra 2 Regents. Essentially by the time, I graduated middle school I had been given exposure to challenging high school material and gained scores that could count towards my high school diploma. Besides academics, the school also offered art, dance and computer science classes to make me engaged in school. A very important question that many parents have before they enroll their students in this school is what exactly is the point of taking high school classes in middle school. I believe that exposure is key. Being exposed to this material at a young age allows you to build up sharper academic skills and gives students the opportunity to take AP classes and classes at Medgar Evers College during high school. The school's AP program is very rich and ap classes are offered in the Humanities, science, math and english. So far I have taken several AP classes such AP US History, AP Chemistry and AP Seminar which have allowed me to explore subjects in greater depth than just the standard regents curriculum. They have made me a stronger writer, critical thinker and better at managing my time. The school also allows high schoolers to earn an associates degree in biology at the college and take college english, math, science and humanities classes with actual college students. This once again gives students an opportunity to retake any regents exams and practice skills that will needed on their SAT and ACT since many of they will be able to take College Algebra and Trigonometry, Pre Calculus, etc.

My daughter just graduated from this school. The trachers do have some opportunities but then again all school do. The educational part is epic they care and want to turn the kids into scholars. Hats off the Dr M. Wilshire he knows every child by name and that says a whole lot. No school is.perfect and kids do nned to be held acxoutable for their actions as so be so quick to pass judgement on the teachers bc some of these students act like adults. The school and its faculty have the focus and drive to make the kids succeed. I am happy with the results. Medgar Evers Rock!

The teachers talk to the students with disrespect and when the students challenge what they said it's a problem. It's supposed to be a uniform school and I've seen ALOT of students out of uniform. A scientific graphing calculator($150.00) was stolen from a student when they were going to the bathroom and when they returned, the calculator was gone from their desk. The student told the teacher and her guidance counselor and she was told " oh well we can't do anything about that".

As others have stated, the faculty at this school is rude, unprofessional and disrespectful. In addition, they want to tout their level of success, when they hand pick the kids they want to accept into the school and once they feel a child may hurt their overall score, they try to have the child moved to other schools.

If I had a choice I wouldn't even give one star. This school administration is deplorable. They are incompetent, lazy and overall rude. Not including the safety issue with the school and lack of the protection. Also the hush hush bullying problem the staff would like to hide. Academic wise the school is good but if this is the environment then it's not worth it.
