Overall, I rate this school pretty poorly. I do not think the school is very effective on helping children progress nor do I feel they do a good job on setting positive examples for the students. I plan to have my kids removed from this school for the upcoming school year.

I withdrew BOTH my children last September. My older son received demerits DAILY for turning around, not placing his feet flat on the ground, dropping his pencil/picking it up, leaning his hand on his face etc. When he reached the max demerits for the day he had detention after school for an hour. (he was NOT allowed to do any HW just sit and "reflect" on his behavior). This went on daily. The last straw was when I witnessed 2 students who attended LP fighting, they were consequently suspended. The same week I received a call from the Dean that my son would be suspended because he exceeded the amount of demerits for the week. This school dealt out the same consequence of suspension for fighting and minor infractions like "not having your feet flat on the ground". My son equated himself with being a "bad" kid. I called the school secretary and told her I was pulling him out. NO ONE from the Middle Academy administration called me back. However, the Elementary Academy my youngest son attended called me 5 times to ask if we could work something out. Removing them was the BEST decision. They are happy at their new school, more expressive and not vilified for natural kid behavior.

As the parent of a child who has attended this school for 5 years, there is no denying the academic success this school has achieved. The teachers & staff are genuinely concerned and committed to helping the students. However, the harsh discipline code & lack of balance truly interferes with it being an excellent learning environment. Students are constantly corrected and penalized for things that would be minor in most other school settings. They are suspended due to accumulation of demerits and not based on the severity of their actions. Aside from the staff stressing every minor behavior of students, which is eventually very discouraging, there is also no balance in the school day. Student's don't have daily recess and are only given a small break at lunch to socialize despite the school day being longer than other schools. If your child is creative or expressive, this is not the school for him/her. There is only room for learning and testing, no social time, no arts. Lastly, the parents have no voice because Charters don't have to have PTAs so, you can complain but not much will change because the only united front is that of the school's.

My school is great, I am very pleased with the push they give the children. They stress college. Minority children needs that kind of support behind them. I only have one problem with them, they need to have sports or music group to interest the kids.

Honestly I went to good public schools and I have to admit that after I saw my boyfriend son grow remarkably within his studies this past years. He reads well and is using words I did not use in school not because I didnt know them but my teachers did not teach us these things. I think this generation of children are more advanced and they are competing with so many international students and they are the ones who are getting the higher paying jobs beause they have already been disciplined and more advanced than children in the US. I agree the lessons at times are abit intense at times but sometimes thats what our children need to push them to be the leaders of this world. We need to prepare them that life is not easy and sometimes you have to push yourself to achieve. I believe you have to push a child not matte what school the child attends. So Charter schools can help parents work together with their children but remember as a parent you are responsible for your child and the teacher can teach but you have to able to help them as well. Stop blaming the school system start working with them to help your child be the best they can be.
