Brooklyn School Of Inquiry Ratings & Reviews

BSI's progressive approach to gifted education made it our first choice and it has delivered on its promises. Beyond this, facilities are in great shape, teachers seem happy, and children are closer than average due to the small size (2 classes per grade). BSI's biggest detractor is its puzzling location, which serves to make it inaccessible to much of Brooklyn (when the free bussing radius is 5 miles, this misses most zones with inadequate G&T programs - the very zones a G&T school should be built to help out) and situates it among populations where the demand for a progressive school is low. Recently, this has begun to affect teachers, with a few leaving last year not out of unhappiness, but a desire to work closer to home in either central /north Brooklyn or SI.Contrary to the poster below, we are enthusiastic about its efforts towards student diversity (and sadly, the school hardly represents an accurate cross-section of Brooklyn) and would like to see more (any?) teachers of color as well. We would love to see more PTO funding to reinstate music/violin. Otherwise, we feel very lucky to be here!

I've been a parent since the school opened in 2009. My experience has been wonderful. I love that our students drive the education in class by discussing the themes among each other. Each student is encouraged to learn in the way they feel most comfortable with. Learning is not through text books but through research on current information.

This school tries so hard to be diverse that they end up blatantly ignoring any group that isn't a minority (ie: only letting disabled children with IEP's into the middle school program for 6th grade starting in 2016). In their efforts to be equal they treat the majority of students unfairly. They reinforce their views and only look at things from one point of view. They take no initiative in the bullying problem until they were required to by administration.

. The irony is they claim to be a very open minded school but if you do not agree with the administration in any way you are an outcast. Also, if you do not donate, a list is posted with your name in order to shame you into donating. The administration openly states that if you don't like their views, that you can go to another school. There is a lot of political rhetoric that children are subjected to, and frankly should not be involved in. Let's face it, let kids be kids. This is an ultra progressive school. The administration focuses on social issues that frankly, should be up to parents to teach. If you are even a little conservative or you have Christian views, you may feel that your child may get labeled for not having the same views as the majority of people there. This is a public school funded by taxpayers and children should not be subject to the social or political views of the administration which are extremely liberal. They claim to be tolerant to all people but if you disagree they'll say"there's the door" one example is when they Encouraged the children to read "banned books" because they think it's censorship to not allow them to read these books. The banned books such as 50 shades of grey, two boys kissing, and looking for Alaska and beyond magenta. If you think your kids should be reading these books at 10-11 years old than this school is a good fit. My opinion is my child is to young for this exposure! Children have plenty of time to be adult not children! On the positive they did teach my child a good number sense.
