We could not have had a better experience at SFSAS, from preschool through middle school. The teachers, most of whom have been there for a very long time, are the exact right person for their age group, they understand their students and are able to set just the right tone. They are intelligent and compassionate. The kids are not only supported academically, but socially as well. Expeditionary Learning is used to an amazing level: it keeps kids interested and teaches them in a way that they love. It is inspiring to see the enthusiasm they have at each school presentation. The students are taught great writing and oratory skills, starting at a young age. Our experience has been that the kids there are happy kids, who like being in school, and are kind to each other. Staff at the school are very supportive, both to their students and to parents. They are open to any discussion. When there is an issue, there is an effective way of dealing with it. Our kids left this school very academically and socially prepared for high school, and as happy and self-confident human beings with a love of learning. I always felt that because of the happy and bullying-free atmosphere at the school, the kids had all the time in the world to just learn. Another aspect I appreciated was the social-economic diversity of the school. This is not a privileged private school environment. Thanks to SFSAS our kids are now happy learners and do well in high school.

This school has okay acedemics. But this isn't the sanctuary school everyone says it is. The students don't stand up for each other, they bully each other. Some of the teachers also make a big deal out of the wrong things. But when it is actually serious, they don't do anything. And even if they did, they would be getting mad at the wrong person. Let's give an example, shall we? Somebody could be sexually harassing others, and they would get mad at the victim. They would make the victim feel like it was their fault, and make them retract the problem.

Like any school SFSAS has its flaws. The academics are in my opinion average only because I am an over achiever but to kids who have difficulties the teachers will work with you very patiently and EL Education has benefited my creativity extremely. Now for the flaws. I thought the problem solving of this school needs some assistance because the punishments aren't effective and helpful. Yes we all make mistakes but some of us made mistakes multiple times and never were punished when they were serious issues. Back to the pros the school is great and has a great sense of community and home sense.

This school does half my parenting for me. They open my children and my family to ideas we don't know or have. They develop a full person. And an excellent student but what I love is the development of the person comes first and that breeds an excellent student! When a child feels good about itself the child does well at everything it touches. The school teach acceptance of all, personal boundaries, self esteem, personal and community integrity all things that have gone missing from our society and educational institutions. We come from an elite private school east coast background and this school trumps all of that! If every public and private school would take even a little of what this school offers our futures would be bright and wonderful! I wish I went to a school like this when I was growing up. There is a diverse socio economic community in the school and it represents the face of the modern world. Many cultures co-exist in our school and they are all embraced and honored. I feel very fortunate to have my children attend this school. It has changed my family forever.
