PLEASE READ Today I found out that my alma mater was closing down. I graduated from Marylawn in 2009. The beginning of my senior year, the school was taken over by a woman who was, in my opinion, very uncaring and disrespectful of the students, faculty and traditions we held dear. She began replacing faculty left and right, dishonored and disrespected elder alumni by beginning a lengthy and expensive remodel of the small in-school chapel, located on the main floor, which had been in honor of and donated by people crucial to the traditions we held there. These alumni and supporters grew angry, but she continued to do what she saw fit. She fired one of the best educators I ever had, a history teacher who gave a lot of homework every day, but also stayed after school, sometimes for hours to make sure you understood everything, got your homework done in a distraction free environment and even helped with homework for other classes. Our 6 day changing curriculum was abolished, though it is essentially what helped the majority of the students who attended prior to her takeover in 2008 and my graduating class, get into major universities, with scholarships. I am very sad to see it go.

i feel extremely duped by the recruiters at Marylawn . I wish that there were some legal grounds that I could pursue in an effort to recoup some of the tuition. I was led to believe that the curriculum was rigorous and discipline problems were virtually unheard of, all of this is a bunch of lies. The school should be closed and the administrative staff held liable for misrepresentation.

I am a former teacher at this school, and I can say that it is a poisonous environment for a child. The good reviews here have been submitted by students who are out too long to give good testimony. Marylawn's principal and administration provides little to no leadership and zero discipline in a school filled with girls from the inner-city who need extreme discipline. Teachers here are looking for a way out. Turnover is constant which includes at least 5 teachers who left in 2011-12 This school claims extreme stats like 100% graduation and college acceptance rates. What it doesn't tell you is how students are passed despite 95% being on a math and reading level far below high school proficiency. The school is losing students fast, so they are extending themselves into middle school to fill the school. I'm worried for this middle school program without resources. Don't send your child here. You are better off in Irvington or Newark Public Schools

When I first attended school visits the administration made sure that they only showed students who reflected their "good behaviour". Naturally, I fell for it and I began attending the school. Throughout my experience of Marylawn I can honestly say that I have learned nothing except for what my previous schools have taught me. They constantly make remarks about how much better they are than public schools when in fact most of their children have come from failing high schools. Most of the students at Marylawn are inner city children as said before who are trying to escape the high schools of their given district. Marylawn is obviously greedy for money as they allow horrible failing students to pass on grade through grade without so much as stopping to see if they've actually learned anything. The discipline of this school is in a horrid shape as the students ultimately run over the children. I have sat in classes where little to no teaching has been done. The poor quality is shown in every student who you spot leaving the school. From the ones who roll their skirts up to the ones who roll over their teachers with vulgar language. I am incredibly happy to be going to Columbia.

I am a graduate of Marylawn, Class of '95. I was ready for the curriculum at Syracuse University. I went onto earn my MBA as well. I will say that I was less than impressed with the college counseling but apparently girls continue to be accepted to colleges across the globe. A course can be at an AP level but it's up to the student to go to a site, pay for, take and pass the test before she is awarded college credit for it. The comment regarding inner city students is irrelevant. There are Catholic schools in every neighborhood in America. There's a reason parents choose to send their girls to Marylawn and I would submit that it is foremost the Catholic education in a single-gender environment. You get that at Marylawn and so much more!
