Frelinghuysen Middle School Ratings & Reviews

My daughter transferred to FMS at the beginning of 7th grade. We have been nothing but impressed with the quality of academics, the specials offered and administrative team. Mr. Thompson, the principal, is fantastic. Very open and friendly with the students and staff, and a forward, innovative thinker. He spear-headed the 1:1 Chromebook initiative at FMS, which has put the students of Morris School District significantly ahead of their counterparts when it comes to 21st century learning. Many parents worry about FMS because it is large, but the house system really breaks it down into manageable groups for the kids. The teachers do make a personal connection with the kids, and get to know their strengths and weaknesses. I have had teachers call me at home when my daughter fell ill, and recommend after school clubs and activities that would suit her shy personality. We have been happy with the quality of academics, especially at the honors level, and there is an amazing selection of after school clubs, sports, music and school play. FMS is a great school with a positive environment for the kids!

FMS is a warm and welcoming school and a great place to be during those important middle school years. The principal, administrators and staff are there for the students not only in the daily school work, but as role models/mentors and their own personal cheerleaders! The kids are challenged academically and 21st Century learning is on full display in all aspects of their learning. FMS prepares its students well for the transition to high school.

Principal left to work as principal of the high school. The move was announced to the high school but he still hasn't told the kids at the middle school (who will be seeing him again in a year or two!) Very poor form. A few words of farewell, I'll miss you etc. would have established a lot of goodwill. Instead, the kids feel abandoned and the parents are bewildered by the level of disrespect.

The teachers are great but it's hard to navigate around the school. I am currently in all honors classes and Quest, and I have to say that the classes are spectacular but we only do packets, which gets very boring after a while.
