Teachers and facility are so invloved with our children! My daughter's academic advancements are a true testament to the education our children get in this school system.

Washington School is a wonderful school with caring teachers and parents. I am truly confused by the last review as it is full of things that are simply not true. First of all, the Principal will be starting her 5th year in that position starting this fall. Previous to that, she taught in the school for 15+ years. This will be my 8th year as a parent at this school and I have seen very little turnover (mostly due to retirements). I have also never had a problem with scheduling conferences or getting email replies from teachers. They are quick and courteous with their replies. Washington School had some of the top scores in the district on the PARCC exam last year and the 5th grade scored in the top 5% of schools in the state on the language arts section. The PTO is active and supplies technology, books, assemblies and fun events for the students. The school also stresses character education, fostering a safe, friendly environment. While it may not be on the best block in town, that has no effect on the quality of teachers, students, staff and the strides this school has made over the last few years. Washington School is one of the best kept secrets in Hawthorne! It is small, diverse and close knit. It is a community that watches out for each other and fosters a great learning environment. I am very proud to say that my children are Washington Wildcats!

"In addition to this school being in a questionable neighborhood with a strip club down the street, the principal is rude and unresponsive when I email her questions. The school was unable to provide me with information as to why they are considered Title 1 and what exactly that means. I was just told by the secretary ""I don't know what it means but we get more money so I guess its good."" My husband and I were denied a conference with the teachers to discuss the children's academic progress because according the principal ""its the end of the year and they are busy."" Students are not being challenged or being given adequate amounts of homework. In the past 4 years the school has had 3 Principals - extremely high turnover of staff. Moving out of the town so I won't have to subject my youngest child to the poor academic experience not only this school but the whole district has to offer."

I was a student there for K -8 and I wouldn't have changed anything about it . Although it was a long time ago Hawthorne is a great town with great people. You can do a whole lot worse, Washington School is and always will be a great school.

"This school really impressed us. We moved into the area 6 months ago and couldn't be happier with ""the little school on the hill"" as everyone seems to call it. My daughters teachers are very attentive, knowledgable, and on top of my child's progress. There are many activities, events, and programs that we have already enjoyed. The parents are very involved and the school intergrates our involvement well. I was nervous at first of the change, however the staff at the school has been great. There are 3 schools in Hawthorne and I was told many different ideas about which school was best. From talking to other parents, I think the Hawthorne school district is just great all together, and I am happy my daughter (age 7) is thriving at Washington."
