My experience was horrible due to the bullying at this school.

As a parent, I have found the school to be academically rigorous, spiritually challenging, and offers a solid athletics program that competes in the New Jersey Interscholastic Conference (NJIC) Patriot League with other small Bergen County public and private schools. The music program and select choir is outstanding, and it is wonderful to be able to experience the beautiful sacred music during the Christmas and spring concerts that are often not allowed at public schools. HCA encourages community involvement and attempts to develop the whole student--spirit, soul, and body--from a Christian worldview. This means disciplinary issues are addressed and reports of inappropriate conduct are treated seriously. I highly recommend Hawthorne Christian Academy as a school that prepares the whole student.

I went to HCA for my first two years of high school. The teachers are Godly and set a good example but I do not recommend this school if you are a minority. I experienced and witnessed some cruel racial jokes and bigotry while I was there and that should pretty much be non-existent within a Christian school and I'm not even black. I have good memories of HCA but sadly I just never fit into the mold of the typical student that attends there. It is a very conservative oriented school so if you don't see eye to eye with that group on all issues, then you will not like it here as the typical student comes from a very conservative family. I am from Essex County and I just felt out of place at this school and transferred out to a Catholic school where ironically I felt more at home as a Christian. My advice is not to choose HCA based on the Christ-Centered approach as that is not the only reason to select a school. I can't comment on the lower and middle school but as far as the high school goes, even if you are a "Christian," these kids still are as bad as the kids you find in a public school; maybe worse. I regret going to HCA.

Racism, bigotry, and lack of accommodation for disabled students is a serious issue here.I left the school for a vocational high school instead, but in the theee years I stayed here, I witnessed students using Jew and Black as an insult, and called muslims terroists. Being Afro-Latino, I had naturally curly hair. The kids here made a joke out of me, saying that my hair looked like a mop and constantly trying to barrade me to straighten it. They called me illegal and many other terms I'd rather not reveal in order to stay anonymous. They made fun of my breast size (calling me flat) and at one point, one of the boys grabbed another's hand and smacked my bottom with it. Having a life-long illness, i had a 504 plan. If your child is disabled, know that this school does not have to follow the 504 plan. In my case, they used that to their advantage. I would have to walk across campus to another building just to check my glucose (something that can easily and discreetly be done). A teacher tried to take away my insulin pump (a device that gives me the medicine I need to stay alive) and received no reprecussions for doing so.The school did know what was going on and the only thing they'd done about it was make me and the bullies shake hands. Also, just recently a student had only gotten a one-day suspension and has to clean the cafeteria for writing reasons he doesn't like and would shoot people in his notebook. One of these reasons was that one girl was black and had "weird" hair. (Her hair was in its natural kinky state. I know this girl.)One last thing is that the school has a education system one year behind public school when it comes to maths. In order to be caught up with the public schools your child will have to take advanced maths.

I love that HCA is Christ focused. I also love the families within this community. I am not happy with the administrators of this school. I feel they are unadaptable and change is impossible even when it's better for the children. The administration gives preferential treatment to certain children based on their family name and relationship. Children are not treated equally.
