My kids are getting a great foundation from attending Milnes. The school is top notch when it comes to education and diversity. My kids have been developing quite nicely since moving here and being at this school system.

Some teachers are great, some so-so, a couple of bad teachers.

Both of our children went to this elementary school, with the youngest having graduated just now, in 2015. Overall, we were pretty happy. The quality of the teachers varies - some were quite good, others only so-so. The student-teacher ratio is more than adequate, that has never been an issue. The program has its strengths and weaknesses:* a very good music program (playing instruments starting at 4th grade)* foreign languages start in 3rd grade and although they go very slowly, it's a good introduction* English: that really depends on the teacher. Good teachers cover it well.* Math: this is the weak spot. The school district uses some program developed by University of Chicago and it is not good at all. It jumps between topics without covering them fully, it does not apply rigorous methodology, it introduces advanced concepts without getting the basics down cold first (e.g., who needs some intro to probability in 3rd grade when they haven't even learned division properly yet?!), it teaches alternate methods for doing basic age-tested things (e.g., who needs 3 different ways to do the long multiplication?? just learn it once the regular way!); etc. It is not horrible but it's not good either. It simply does not build a solid foundation.* Science: excellent textbooks and some good overview, including some advanced concepts. However, not covered sufficiently - strangely, seems to be sprinkled throughout the school year in 4th and 5th grades rather than being taught consistently throughout the year. Not enough preparation for the 4th grade Science NJAsk, which is quite challenging and covers a ton of material. The principal is very good - very accessible, very involved, responds to parents' concerns and requests. (Unfortunately the math program precedes him and is district-wide).

Excellent teachers and exceptional staff/. My son has ADHD and is gifted and the teachers and staff at Milnes have been wonderful in nurturing his strengths. The arts are very strong at this skill with the highest participation in instrumental music of any school in Fair Lawn. Their resources are terrific and the principal is smart and responsive. I'm a professor, so I pay attention to pedagogy and within the limits of public education, this school does a great job.

My son goes to Milnes, it has a very strong PTA organization and experienced teachers. It is larger than some of the other elementary schools in Fair Lawn and yet very nicely managed.
