Dwight-Englewood School Ratings & Reviews

The upper school in particular provides incredible opportunities and support to the students in academics, sports, and performing arts. Teachers, college guidance staff, and office staff are committed and of highest caliber. Quality of the education children receive here is unparalleled; one receives a top ranked boarding school-type education without the boarding.

As far as private schools go, I can say this is a typical one. I'm a middle school student, and I've been at Dwight since I was in the lower school. I take the highest courses offered, and I can officially complain that there are only advanced courses in math and languages in grades 6-8. Up until a few years ago, there were advanced English and history classes in the eighth grade, however they were eliminated because the administration "didn't want to make anyone feel bad." Any average student will have a great experience at Dwight Englewood School, but for a school that prides themselves on an exceptional curriculum, I can confidently say that they do not meet the needs that a bright child requires. Finally, one of the things that is the most irksome is that Dwight definitely has a political agenda. They push an extremely liberal perspective, which under different circumstances would be fine, however they do so without acknowledging the fact that there is a different point of view of the world. Overall, many students will have a fantastic educational experience at Dwight, however I personally have not. I'm at least enjoying my time there a lot more than public school.

Not a good fit for my 6th grader – read why1) Homework – both quantity and policiesHomework was assigned every night including weekends, That amount of homework, even if completing were not an issue, left him with maybe 2 hours of free time in any given day.DE requires homework to be done on holiday if the family leaves before the holiday starts. For a 6th grader? Too extreme.Homework notes one for each assignment must be written home and to multiple authorities every time an assignment is not handed in on time. This caused my child severe anxiety.DE refuses to quantify how much homework counts toward grades. We were left with the impression that our child would fail a course if all homework was not in on time. 2) My child was constantly criticized for not speaking up in class. However they did admit that when called upon he knew the answers. My child is an introvert. I felt they wanted robots not children.3) No grades are given in 6th grade. I found this to be a bigger problem than I had expected. Since we did not think to record his score on every quiz or assignment that was graded, at the end of the year we really had no idea how he did academically. When we complained about not knowing, the dean told us we should have kept track. Report card narratives are given a couple times, but are not particularly helpful and were often excessively negative – more negative that any performance review I ever gave to an employee.4) One general note of caution: I should not have shared with the school any difficulties we were having at home. My child’s behavior in school was always socially correct, he only missed 4 days of school early in the year. He did have concentration problems early in the school year, due to lack of sleep, and difficulty with beginning Spanish. However, because I shared too much private information, my child was labeled as likely ADHD, as having school refusal problem, and having emotional problems. That over reaction by DE’s administration haunted all of us throughout the remainder of the year. There are many wonderful academic and extra curricular activities at DE, as there are at every elite private school, but based on our experience I would strong recommend against choosing DE.

As a middle school student, I felt the quality of education at D-E was inconsistent. Some of the more experienced teachers were outstanding, but many of the newer teachers were very poorly prepared. They struggled to answer questions on information in the textbook, and were unable to answer any questions requiring further knowledge. I transferred to the Bergen Academies, and was surprised to find that there were more consistently strong teachers for free. The top teachers at D-E are excellent, and worth the tuition if you can afford it. Unfortunately, the other half of the faculty is very weak, and the tuition is much too high for classes with teachers who have limited mastery of the content they are teaching.

I had a very unusual background, so my experience may not be relevant to many of D-E's applicants. I was born into a lower socio-economic community, and attended substandard elementary schools. When I transferred into Dwight-Englewood as a 7th grader, I was tracked in the lowest classes due to my poor academic skills. I was told by the admissions staff that I would advance into honors courses if I did well at D-E. Although I thrived academically and was placed on the waitlist for honors courses each year, there were never any openings in these courses. I was told each year that it was good that for me to remain in regular courses since they "needed bright students to lead the regular classes." Unfortunately, I was at a significant disadvantage when I applied to college, since it appeared that I had not taken advantage of the most challenging educational opportunities at D-E. I was not able to attend a highly selective university, but I thrived in college and was able to attend an Ivy League graduate school. If you have a bright child who isn't immediately placed into the honors track, please send them to another school that will help your child achieve his or her full potential.
