Northern Highlands provides an very unique public school dynamic as freshman arrive from 4+ different towns; mainly Allendale, Ho-Ho-Kus, Upper Saddle River, and Saddle River. This allows freshman to have an experience of meeting all new friends, teammates, and classmates early on in their lives and helps them prepare for college and their eventual professional years. Furthermore, that this is a public school also allows many to experience the diversity and quality of education that many private and parochial schools in the area also enjoy. At NH, I found that the curriculum was broad and offered plenty of options as well as levels, i.e. regular, CP, Honors, AP allowing students to challenge themselves. Athletics are certainly a selling point for the school as well, although it is notable that female athletics are far superior to males relative to their competition. All in all, I founds that NHRHS was a tremendous high school and I would recommend it, its faculty, curriculum, and programs to any parents or child looking for a challenge.

My daughter loves her High School! Teachers always find time to connect with the students. As a parent, I wish every High School will adjust it's schedule to have 8:30 AM or 9 AM start. Some not essential classes could be shortened. Our kids NEED to SLEEP more! They will be much more productive!

Good school academically, but those who say that the sports program is competitive must be talking about the girls' teams, which are stellar. The boys' teams tend to not do very well, aside from a few exceptions. Plus, some sports are sorely lacking as compared to others. I considered attending and learned a lot about the school during my years in public school (in Allendale), especially in eighth grade. It just didn't seem like a fit for me, but it is still an excellent school. But to the reviews that say that the sports teams are competitive... not if you are male.

You would be a fool to not want to go to Northern Highlands. This school has a whole separate building for science, all AP class options, excellent teachers who know everyone's name and stay in touch with parents, EVERY teacher has after school extra help hours, challenging curriculum but at the same time students who aren't comprehending don't get overlooked in the interest of publishing favorable statistics, the superintendent, principal, and even vice principal are THOROUGHLY involved with the students right down to knowing them all personally, athletics that compete on state and national levels, superior arts classes/programs that you will rarely see at other high schools, parents are very involved with the school and in many areas you will find parents still volunteering even 20 years after their kids have graduated. I mean do I have to keep going? If you can find something negative about Northern Highlands it's because you spent all your time doing that instead of taking advantage of everything it has to offer.
